Below, you'll find the full transcript of today’s episode, in case you prefer to read or want to reference something we talked about.

About Storm at Nottingham Castle

Three sisters are thrust into an uncertain future when their wealthy stepfather dies, leaving them with a small annuity to live upon. They find refuge with an aged uncle who convinces them to live in the apartments at Nottingham Castle, whose halls are shrouded in history and secrets, and whose residents watch the sisters with unsettling interest. Chief among them is the handsome property manager, Charles Rushforth, whose quiet authority conceals more than estate affairs and a brooding lodgekeeper who seems to know every hidden passage and whispered rumor…

Charlotte Fieldstone received a parting gift from her late stepfather—a set of valuable pilgrimage badges meant to safeguard them from want. But hidden hands seek the relics, and in the caves beneath the castle, a restless hunger stirs among those who trade in sacred things. At the center stands her uncle, whose charm deceives, and a Duchess, whose influence can tip scales on a whim.

As Charlotte’s uncle is swept into a dangerous quest, tensions rise. Charlotte must depend upon a stranger to shield her from a society whose motives aren’t as they appear. Will Charlotte be able to keep her sisters together as the tempest threatens to tear them apart?

Surrounded by deceit and danger, Charlotte must cling to faith and to one whose protection feels perilously like love...

On this episode of A Spot of Story, I'm chatting with Ann Elizabeth Fryer about her Gothic Regency, Storm at Nottingham Castle*, which is the first book in her Sisters of Sherwood series. Ann, welcome!

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Hey, Danielle. Thanks for having me on.

Danielle Grandinetti: You're so welcome. Ann is not only my critique partner, she loves nothing more than using story and romance to relay the depths and graciousness of a Father who holds us securely in the palm of His hands. Daydreaming her surroundings from a young age, she's lived in historic homes most of her life and regularly participates in backyard archaeology. When she's not writing historical projects, her contemporary novels show a flavor of her forever passion for all things old. Ann, her husband, and three children make their home in a small town in Illinois, where they can hear church bells keep time and tradition.

I'm so excited to have you on! Like I mentioned, Ann is my critique partner, so we get to read each other's stories before they're really stories—hearing all the ideas while they're still in the "might not even make it into the book" stage. So I'm excited to talk about her latest series today.

Ann, my podcast loves to unite us over a love of story. What are you reading right now?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: I picked up just for fun—I think it was National Speak Like a Pirate Day the other day—Mary Lou Tyndall's book. Let me pull it up real quick on my Kindle so I get the title right: Legend of the King's Ring, Book 1, called The Summons*. A few chapters in, and it's swashbuckling from the start.

Danielle Grandinetti: That's awesome!

All right, turning to your story, Storm at Nottingham Castle, which is Book 1 in the series. Let's start with what a day in the life of your characters looks like.

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Oh my goodness. All right, which character should we start with?

Danielle Grandinetti: The series follows three sisters, so maybe start with a sister?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: This is Charlotte Fieldstone's story, and she has spent all of her life in Edwinstowe at her stepfather's estate, Piping's Cross. Her days are lived as a gentlewoman, so she's not doing laundry at all. She's not cooking. She can't even make herself a pot of tea in the kitchen, though she knows how to pour it properly, because every lady can do that!

My character and her sisters love archery. The stepfather, as a way of connecting with his new stepdaughters, made sure they were outfitted and learned how at a young age, and it comes in handy in the stories—especially as they're growing up right next to the legendary Sherwood Forest. He uses that story to capture their attention, gather them in, and endear them to him, which it certainly did. They love their stepfather dearly. But at the very beginning, he dies. Charlotte will no longer live the life of a lady in her everyday life... so maybe her no-more-laundry days are over!

Danielle Grandinetti: It sounds like we definitely have to read the story! What was your favorite scene to write in this book, and why?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: It's really hard to choose! I think one of my favorite scenes early on is when the hero walks into Piping's Cross in the middle of the storm. The door slams open, the lightning flashes, and there he is. It's dripping with romance!

Danielle Grandinetti: Yes, definitely! I love that. What was some unique research required to write this story?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Unique research—so much, because my characters are in legendary Robin Hood territory in Nottinghamshire. They travel from Edwinstowe to the city of Nottingham, and it is loaded with history. I did lots and lots of research on locations and Nottingham Castle itself.

Danielle Grandinetti: What was some of that research you wish you could have included that didn't actually make it into the book?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Goodness, trying to remember! I have lists of everything I found. There are canals in Nottingham that I didn't include because it just wasn't relevant to the story. Some other historic locations sounded really cool, but real history had the risk of overloading the story with facts, so I had to be careful to make sure the details wove in usefully. I did mention that the locals believe the entrance to the caves is haunted by a ghost at certain times, which is linked to an actual local legend, so I had fun with that!

Danielle Grandinetti: That's awesome! Backing up a little bit, what was the inspiration behind not just this book, but the series of the three sisters?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Just brainstorming about what I love about Regency, Gothic, mystery, and history. I love medieval times and Robin Hood themes, so I enjoyed mashing all those flavors together. Young Regency women enjoyed archery as a sport, so that was something I could include to add those flavors and keep it Robin Hood-like.

Danielle Grandinetti: I love that. Robin Hood is one of my favorite stories, so I love that you wove that theme into the series.

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: I love the Walt Disney Robin Hood with the fox and all the fun animal characters—they're the best!

Danielle Grandinetti: What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: The encouragement I hope readers get from every single project I put out is that there's a God who is with them through any storm they encounter. He does not leave.

Danielle Grandinetti: That's beautiful. Ann, thank you so much for joining me today and talking about your Gothic Regency, Storm at Nottingham Castle. Book 2 comes out in October, Tempest at Rufford Abbey*, and I'm so excited about that one. Where can readers find you and your books online?

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Readers can find me at AnnFryerWrites.com, and they can find my books on Amazon.

Danielle Grandinetti: Sounds awesome! I will link to all of that in the show notes so everyone can find you. Thanks for joining me today, Ann.

Ann Elizabeth Fryer: Good to talk to you!

An Author Interview with Jerusha Agen

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I’m not one of those writers who writes because I must. I don’t process my thoughts through the act of writing, and while I have no shortage of story ideas, I’m not a writer who cannot rest until I put them down on the page. Perhaps as a result, I don’t often enjoy the writing process. Instead, I enjoy and love having written. One of my favorite moments is when I’ve finished a story, and my very favorite moment is when I hold the published print copy in my hands.

Funny thing, I’m the same way with baking. I don’t really enjoy baking, but I love having baked. Maybe that’s because I get to eat the results!

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

For the hero, Robert Weston, a usual day is filled with patient appointments. In these therapy sessions, the psychiatrist tries to help his patients achieve healthier, happier lives by treating their psychological problems.

Like all people in medical fields, Robert also spends much of his time documenting his sessions and treatments for his patients.

As a malpractice defense attorney, Monty Montgomery also deals with a lot of paperwork, as she daily reviews case files, writes and proofs briefs, arguments, and the like.

The more exciting part of Monty’s profession takes her into the courtroom where she presents oral arguments in defense of her clients, interviews witnesses, and tries to persuade judges and juries to agree that her clients are innocent.

Often, preparation for her cases also involves assigning investigative work and background checks to the private investigator who works for Montgomery Legal Services.

What unique research was required to write this story?

I had to do a deep dive into something I’d never expected to need to research—depositions. Monty Montgomery, the heroine of Watched, is a malpractice defense attorney representing the hero, psychiatrist Dr. Robert Weston. For the case, and also for their investigation into who is threatening their lives, Monty has Robert sit in on her depositions of witnesses.

I’d never realized before that while some movies and books may show the setup to depositions, I’ve never actually seen the depositions themselves portrayed. I learned interesting legal parameters in my research, as well as unexpected elements regarding who can be present at depositions, the use of objections, witnesses’ rights, and more.

But if that sounds a bit dry, don’t worry. In Watched, the deposition scenes read much like watching Perry Mason in action. Quick, intelligent, and fun as readers join Monty and Robert in trying to solve the mystery! (Yes, I’m a big Perry Mason fan.)

What did you learn while writing this story?

That airbags deflate almost instantly after deployment! Special thanks to a proofreader who told me that from her first-hand experience.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

God is greater than we can think or imagine. When we cannot depend on others or even ourselves, we can always, always depend on God. He is never-changing, always in control, ever faithful, and more than able to carry His children through any trials we face.

The Location Scout’s Quest

About The Location Scout’s Quest

Sometimes you have to travel across the world to discover where you belong.

For ten years, Gwen Thorton has chased Christmas magic for a living by scouting charming towns for heartwarming romance films. But now that magic feels more like monotony and an ache for something new. Then she's offered a project far outside her comfort zone: a cozy murder mystery filming in a small town in South Africa. It’s a world away from where she lives and everything familiar, but it's something she believes will revive her spirit.

Preston “Ham-the Hammer” Forsythe has forged his path with discipline, order, and a heart locked away for the sake of his career. Known for his adrenaline-fueled action hits, he’s ready for a break from the films that have boxed in his reputation as a director. This movie is his shot at a career-defining breakthrough to redefine himself as a multi-dimensional director. He refuses to let anything or anyone derail that goal.

But God has a sense of humor. When Gwen and Preston first meet as strangers on a quiet hiking trail, they share a breathtaking view, a few easy laughs, and a spark neither of them can quite shake. When they discover they’ll be working together, that spark becomes a tension neither of them expected. As production hurdles mount and the town splits over having a filming crew interrupt their quaint town, Gwen and Preston find themselves drawn together to complete the film and redirect their lives.

As the cameras roll and the lines between script and life blur, they’ll have to confront what they truly believe about love, purpose, and faith. Because sometimes the most meaningful stories aren’t the ones we plan… they’re the ones that find us, just when we need them most.

Escape to the breathtaking beauty of South Africa in this heartwarming inspirational romance filled with hope, second chances, and the unexpected ways God leads us home. Order your copy today and discover the story waiting just beyond the next bend in the trail.

Research That Didn't Make It Into the Story: Don't Throw the Baby Out with the Bath Water

"Don't throw the baby out with the bath water" is an old saying that reminds us it's okay to discard what isn't useful—as long as we don't lose what truly matters. That lesson applies perfectly to writing fiction.

When I decided to join this 15-book series set in the fictional South African town of Cedarfontein, I knew I was taking on a challenge. I'd never been to South Africa and, unfortunately, knew very little about the country. Friends who had visited mostly talked about the incredible wildlife they saw on safari. Fascinating? Absolutely. Helpful for my story? Not really—because there isn't a safari in The Location Scout's Quest. That meant it was time to dive into research.

My novel follows Gwen Thornton, a location scout who has spent the past ten years searching the United States and Canada for picturesque towns to use in sweet romance movies. Then she's offered an assignment unlike any she's ever had. She’ll be finding filming locations in South Africa for a cozy murder mystery television series.

Like me, Gwen has never been there. Which meant I had to experience South Africa through research before I could let her experience it on the page.

I started with her journey from San Antonio, Texas, to Cape Town. I researched flight routes, airport executive lounges, first-class accommodations, layover options, and total travel time. The trip would involve about nineteen hours in the air and another eight hours in airports between flights.

I found all of it fascinating. In fact, I wrote a full chapter describing Gwen's trip. Then I deleted almost all of it as it didn't move the story forward.

The final novel only includes the first leg of Gwen's journey—from San Antonio to New York. That portion mattered because it's where she meets another passenger who has spent time in South Africa and encourages her to take a safari during her visit. It's a brief conversation, but it's important because that traveler unexpectedly reappears later in the story.

Everything else? Gone.

The same thing happened when I researched Gwen's arrival in Cape Town. I studied aerial photographs of the city and learned about the terminal and surrounding landscape. After hours of research, all of that information became a single paragraph describing Gwen's first glimpse of South Africa.

One area of research I kept returning to, however, was language. I wanted the dialogue to feel authentic without overwhelming readers. I compiled pages of South African slang, idioms, and everyday expressions, then contrasted them with the familiar sayings Gwen would naturally use as someone born and raised in the American South.

Most of that research never appears in the book. But it shaped how the characters speak, think, and interact. Those subtle differences helped make the conversations feel genuine, even though readers only see a fraction of the work behind them.

That's one of the hidden joys of writing fiction.

Readers may only encounter a sentence, a paragraph, or a brief conversation, but those moments often rest on hours—or even days—of research. While much of that work never makes it onto the page, it gives the story depth, authenticity, and heart.

One of the biggest areas of research involved learning what it actually takes to bring a movie from concept to the big screen. I spent hours studying the entire filmmaking process—from pre-production planning and location scouting to principal photography and post-production editing. Surprisingly, only a small portion of that research made it into the novel. Most of it simply helped me create an accurate timeline for the production schedule and gave me a better understanding of the pressures and decisions my characters would face.

I was also able to draw on my own experiences from my days in college studying script writing. During that time, I obtained a press pass to visit a local movie set during filming. That gave me the opportunity to chat with some of the cast and crew and learn how scenes were cut and added to with bit players and action changes. I used the concept of what I saw there in one of the scenes of this book

Perhaps the most valuable research, however, came from conversations with several of the South African authors writing in this series. Since they live there, they could share the little details no travel guide can capture—everyday routines, local customs, expressions, and what life is really like.

One of my favorite parts of working with this varied group of authors was putting together a recipe book based on recipes their character would probably like to eat. I was the one in charge of compiling the recipes into a book, which I enjoyed doing as I love learning new recipes. Some of the recipes were a little hard for me to understand at first because cooking pan measurements were in centimeters and Celsius was used for temperature. I use inches and Fahrenheit. It wasn’t until I translated the differences that I could tell if the recipes looked correct or were missing a line or two in details – which only happened twice.

Although much of the research done in writing my story in Cedarfontein is not included in my final edit, it helped me add depth to the story, making it more than merely a setting. It became a town with relatable characters who felt emotions that we all feel during our lives.
