About To Love a Beast

Beauty & the Beast in 1800’s Texas.

Once known among New York’s elite as the American Adonis, Everett Griffin now lives as a recluse in the wilds of Texas. The treachery of a former admirer left his face and his spirit riddled with scars, so he hides himself away, his only companions a trio of trusted servants and an oversized dog. Locals whisper of the beastly man who lives in the gloomy manor outside of town and his tendency to attack anyone who dares approach. Everett relishes his fearsome reputation and uses it as a shield to guard his privacy. Until a young woman as stubborn as she is beautiful infiltrates his sanctum and lays siege to his defenses.

When an injury to her father jeopardizes the family’s book binding business, Callista Rosenfeld determines to fulfill the contract herself, and no insufferable client or woman-eating dog will deter her. Finding unlikely allies among Mr. Griffin’s staff, Callista secures her position and sets to work transforming the manor’s remarkable library. Her employer transforms as well, his ill-tempered growls subsiding to reveal a considerate, intellectual nature. Affection blooms as Callista and Everett discover hidden depths in each other, but the evil schemes of a vengeful hunter threaten to leave their love and their lives in tatters.

Book Excerpt

I’m delighted to share a sneak peek of my latest western fairy tale, To Love a Beast. Beauty & the Beast is my favorite fairy tale. How could it not be with a bookish heroine and a wounded hero? Add some forced proximity, a quirky supporting cast, and a vain villain seeking vengeance, and you know we’re going to have loads of fun!

Here is a snippet from the scene where Everett and Callista meet for the first time. Enjoy!

Karen

Courage, Callista. Just because you can’t see any evidence of his presence doesn’t mean that God isn’t with you. We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.

Even as that scriptural assurance moved through her mind, something unseen made its presence known. Something with a deep bass bark that rumbled over her like the thunder of an approaching storm.

Her head spun to the right. Her gaze scoured the shadows for the guard dog whose territory she’d invaded. She saw nothing.

Heart thumping, she rushed ahead, praying the manor would be around the next bend. But before she could reach the bend in question, the barking shifted direction, now coming from in front of her. She stumbled to a halt. Leaves rustled nearby. The low-pitched barks grew closer. Nearly upon her. She’d never be able to outrun the beast.

Callista squeezed her eyes shut, wrapped her arms around her middle, and prayed for a miracle.

Gruff barks echoed with a percussive depth so near, she could feel them like tremors in the earth. Instinct urged her to flee, but reason glued her feet to the ground. He hadn’t attacked yet. She’d not give him reason to think of her as prey. Perhaps if she imitated a tree long enough, he’d grow bored and search for entertainment elsewhere.

However, the barks grew increasingly insistent. Apparently, her tree act wasn’t as convincing as she’d hoped. Or perhaps she was too convincing, for the beast decided to fell her. He rammed his head into her ribcage and threw her backwards. Callista let out a startled yelp as she stumbled and landed on her backside. Eyes wide open now, she stared into the face of the massive beast who stood over her. Even her imagination could not have conjured a dog like this. On all fours, he towered over her, his fur the tawny gold of a lion, contrasting with the dark brown of his face and eyes.

He barked again, and she flinched, bringing up an arm to fend him off.

“Spartacus. Heel!”

The dog’s countenance cleared as he turned toward the voice. A heartbeat later, he loped off the path and into the mesquite.

Callista scrambled to her feet, dusted off her rump, and turned in the direction the dog had gone. “Thank you, sir.” She lifted her voice to be sure the man could hear her. She strained for a glimpse of him but saw nothing. “My name is—”

“I don’t care what your name is. You’re not welcome here.” The harshness of the man’s tone took her aback. “I want you off my property. Now!”

Callista fisted her hands. She had not come all this way to be bullied into leaving before she’d made it to the front door. “I have an appointment with Mr. Lightfoot.”

“Mr. Lightfoot takes his orders from me, and I want you gone. End of discussion.”

End of discussion? Not likely. This boorish excuse of a human being needed a lesson in manners.

Swallowing her mounting frustration, Callista called forth the conciliatory tone she used on the rare occasion she had to deal with a difficult client. “I’m sorry if there has been some miscommunication.” She stepped off the path and began wending her way through the mesquite, hoping to have a civilized discussion face-to-face instead of yelling at one another across the vegetation. “I’ve been hired—”

“Stop right there!”

Did she detect a note of fear beneath the dominating anger? She took another step.

“Come any closer and I’ll sic Spartacus on you.”

She didn’t believe him. He might be rude and overbearing, but he’d called off his dog earlier. Intuition told her he wasn’t the type to harm an innocent woman. Scare her, yes. But not harm her.

Callista dared another step. “Please, sir. If you’ll just listen to what I have to say. . .”

“I’m done listening. Be gone!”

Hurried footsteps echoed from within the brush, and a moment later Callista caught a glimpse of the back of a man clad in a reddish-brown greatcoat darting between the trees, a giant dog at his side.

He had fled from her. Interesting.

With the threat of the Mastiff no longer looming, renewed determination bolstered Callista’s courage. She returned to the path and marched forward with purpose. The master of Manticore Manor would soon learn that she did not surrender so easily.

Logan Crawford only slept well in two places. On the ground on the side of a mountain, with his pack for a pillow, or in a short takeoff and landing fixed-wing aircraft.

Smoke in the air.

Logan leaned back against his seat, the vibration so familiar now that he hardly rested when he couldnt hear the rumble of an airplane engine or feel the hard ground of the backcountry.

This was what hed been born to do.

Hed discovered in the last few years that he could fight fire anywhere, but he needed the rush of jumping. The flap of the parachute above him. There was nothing like the feel of falling through the air. Couldnt find that in a town like Last Chance County, fighting residential fires as part of a rescue squad with his twin, Bryce. Being back home had been great, but there was nothing like smokejumping.

I see the header! their spotter, Mark, called out down the plane. Then he trained his binoculars on the copilot window, his attention on their target while his long gray hair hung down his back.

Logan glanced at the cockpit, also occupied by the pilot, who was a retiree whod flown for JPATS for years. According to Neil, flying a bunch of rowdy smokejumpers wasnt so different from flying transports between judicial districts and correctional institutions for the US Marshals. Thankfully, Neil didnt have to fear for his life if something went wrong.

At least, not beyond the normal perils of being a wildland pilot.

The smokejumper boss, Jade Ransom, hefted herself out of her seat and went to speak with Neil and Mark. Shed been Logans jump boss at the end of last season in Montana and had moved back up here with her boyfriend Crispin in the offseason.

They werent the only ones whod come north.

Almost there, right?

Logan glanced at the smokejumper in the seat next to him. Orion Price was another one of the people he knew from Ember, Montana. A rookie smokejumper this year, and with his brown hair and blue eyes, the kid looked like a college student. Young, but not as young as one of their hotshots, Mack. Nervous?

Orion said, You ever look out the window of the plane and wonder why you thought this was a good idea?

No way. Nervous, but trying to hide it. You trained plenty for this and passed the qualifiers, Logan said over the drone of the plane engine. You wouldnt be here if you hadnt earned it by proving you can do the job.

“Charlie, you let me do the talking.” A slight nod was all she received as they approached Mr. Trexler.

“Mr. Trexler, this is my brother, Charlie.”

The two sized each other up during a long handshake.

Rachel took a breath to speak, but Charlie jumped in, “My sister here needs a husband, and I need a job.”

Rachel gasped.

“You seem like a decent man. Marry Rachel, and she’ll help with the kids. I’ll work for you till I can stand on my own.” He thrust out his hand. “Deal?”

“Charles Dalton!” Rachel exclaimed.

“Deal,” Mr. Trexler said.

The men went on making plans while Rachel stood in stunned silence. As soon as they were away from the orphanage, she promised herself Charlie would get a proper tongue-lashing—if she could get her tongue to cooperate.

About Her Amish Refuge

Could her safe haven in a storm

Be a path back to her faith?

Caught in a blizzard pregnant and alone, former Amish woman Florene Schroder stumbles upon an unexpected sanctuary on an Amish farm. She never expects her rescuer to be Gil Kestler, a gentle giant from the community she left behind years ago. Forced together as they brave the storm, their wounded hearts slowly begin to warm toward one another. But as the snow starts to melt, can they conquer their fears to embrace love…or will the secrets they harbor keep them apart?

About Pamela Desmond Wright

Pamela grew up in a small, dusty Texas town. Her childhood includes memories of the olden days; old-fashioned oil lamps, cooking on an authentic wood-burning stove and making popcorn over a crackling fire at her grandparents’ cabin. The cabin was later donated to The Muleshoe Heritage Center in Muleshoe Texas where it can be toured by the public.

Book Excerpt

She’d made a mistake. And she was going to die.

Florene Schroder lay on the hard, cold ground. Twisted and limp, she didn’t move. Every inch of her ached. In her dazed state, she barely had the strength to move. Moments ago, her world had been a tempest of emotions. A heated argument with her boyfriend had escalated to the point of no return.

Scrunching her eyes shut, she fought to erase the memory of the assault. Visions of his open palm smashing against her face rewound and replayed in her mind. His rage and bitter accusations echoed in her ears. In a fit of anger, he’d stopped the car and yanked her out, kicking her aside like so much trash. She’d rolled over rocks and debris, landing at the bottom of a ditch.

Limbs turning slack, she struggled to remain conscious. A shiver ripped through her. Shock receded. The arctic wind turned sharp. Flecks of ice whipped around her, driving the cold deeper.

Hovering on the brink of hypothermia, she released a gasp of agony. Her mind raced with fear. Watching the vehicle’s taillights disappear had frightened her more than the assault. Their fading glow was a stark reminder of her isolation. He’d left her in the middle of nowhere, miles from town.

Attempting to warm herself, she rolled over and curled into a tight ball. Clasping her hands together, she tucked them under her chin. She was cold. And so tired. Going to sleep, if only for a few minutes, would be so easy. If she slept, she could dream.

But if she slept, she would perish.

Adrenaline surged, and her eyes snapped open. Giving up would be fatal. Slowly, she uncurled. Clenching her teeth, she struggled to find her balance. A moan pushed past her lips. She had to get up and find shelter. Soon.

As she stood, her rebellious knees threatened to buckle. Drawing in a lungful of chilly air helped strengthen and steady her. Attempting to focus, she took one step forward, then another. Confusion wrapped around her like a blindfold, disorienting her senses. Rural highways were long, dark and endless. She didn’t know where she was, or which way to go. On a stormy night, hours might pass before anyone came through.

Shivering, Florene crossed her arms to shield herself. Her thin jacket and jeans clung to her body, frozen and stiff, as if trying to suffocate her with their icy grip. Head tipping back, she focused on the angry sky. The clouds were thick and churning, sending down a fury that seemed almost sentient, as if nature conspired to punish her. The wind thrashed harder, merging the leaden flakes into a relentless whiteout. Unforgiving and merciless, the chilling blast seemed determined to swallow her.

As her strength ebbed away, exhaustion settled deep within her bones. Faced with an impossible challenge, she found a disquieting notion slithering into her brain.

Give up.

Eyelids growing heavy, Florene closed her eyes. It would be easy to slip into the dark void. Then she would be at peace.

A gentle flutter deep inside yanked her back from the precipice. If she died, she wouldn’t be the only victim.

Crying in despair, she pressed her hands against her stomach. The revelation of her pregnancy had shaken her to the core. She might not care for herself, but what about the new life she carried? Every beat of her heart echoed with the realization that she was no longer alone; there was a soul, pure and innocent, relying on her every breath.

I have to be strong—for both of us.

A surge of determination strengthened her. Ja, she’d made mistakes. But the past was gone. Tomorrow offered the hope of forgiveness.

If she survived.

Exhausted beyond weariness, Florene peered across the highway, desperately searching for signs of human life. The frigid wasteland stretched far in every direction.

Focusing through the blur of whiteness, she struggled to make sense of the shifting landscape. Squinting hard, she glimpsed blocky shapes outlined amid a faraway gathering of trees. She couldn’t be sure, but they looked like houses. A barn and other buildings, too. And was that firelight flickering through faraway windows?

Elation filled her. Her heart pounded with a mixture of hope and desperation. She couldn’t be sure if her eyes were playing tricks, but the shapes grew more defined. The faraway farm beckoned, promising refuge from the merciless cold.

The squall gusted harder, giving her a nudge.

Breaths visible in the frosty air, Florene covered her belly, protecting the fragile life she carried from the storm’s wrath. Driven by primal instinct, she began to walk, one leaden step leading to another…

Excerpt from Winning Over the Baker

Footfalls approached the other side of the door, and Tam stepped back with a smile. When it opened, she was greeted by Patrick Butler, instead of her business acquaintance.

Light green eyes made a striking contrast against his dark hair and olive complexion, and his cropped, wavy locks lay mussed in a charming way. A giant, well-fed ginger striped cat was curled up in the crook of one of his arms. It looked like it could take down a gazelle. “Oh. Hi, again. I thought… Is Donna here?” she stammered.

“Good morning to you. ” His jeans were dusted with white powder and his shirt sleeves rolled up. “Donna already headed over to the bakery. Can I help you?”

Tam flushed with guilt. “Um, no.” She couldn’t admit she’d come to ask about the peaches behind his back.

The ginger cat yawned lazily, and Tam gaped at the mouth full of sharp teeth. The saber-toothed tiger’s owner looked at her in curiosity as a second cat, a Siamese kitten, strolled up and rubbed against his ankle. “Nice fur babies,” Tam said, trying to figure out how to get peaches and avoid any contact with the cats. “I didn’t know Donna had animals.”

“They’re mine. They’re Butlers, too.”

“Interesting name.” He didn’t look like a butler. Her pulse skipped when he leaned one thick shoulder against the door.

Excerpt from Sunrise Reef

Was something burning?

Bren Ryan stopped reading the instructions on the tube of hair dye in her hand, destined for use later today, and frowned at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Sniffed.

A faint acrid odor with a hint of fishiness prickled her nose.

Not quite a burn smell but close. And definitely worth investigating.

Leaving the dye on the vanity, she followed the scent, wincing as another slash of lightning strobed through the sky outside the window, followed by a boom of bone-jarring thunder.

Man, this was bizarre weather. Squalls on the Oregon coast were supposed to be confined to the winter months. They never ushered in August—especially storms that went on for hours. Besides, even in the winter, torrential rain and high winds were far more common than lightning and thunder.

Whatever the cause of this uncharacteristic outburst from Mother Nature, it was certainly a dramatic beginning to her thirtieth birthday.

And perhaps it was also an omen that her decision to create a birthday resolution to-do list and shake things up a bit during this new decade of her life was sound.

The smell intensified as she approached the kitchen, and she paused on the threshold. Gave the room a slow scan.

Everything appeared to be normal.

Could the unpleasant odor be coming from outside?

Bren crossed to the window above the sink, pushed it higher than the scant inch she’d left it cracked, and leaned over. Inhaled.

The air outside was damp but fresh.

This was weird.

She straightened up and swiveled back toward the room.

Where could the smell be—

Wait.

Was that smoke coiling out of the electrical socket at the end of the counter?
