Excerpt from Winning Over the Baker

Footfalls approached the other side of the door, and Tam stepped back with a smile. When it opened, she was greeted by Patrick Butler, instead of her business acquaintance.

Light green eyes made a striking contrast against his dark hair and olive complexion, and his cropped, wavy locks lay mussed in a charming way. A giant, well-fed ginger striped cat was curled up in the crook of one of his arms. It looked like it could take down a gazelle. “Oh. Hi, again. I thought... Is Donna here?” she stammered.

“Good morning to you. ” His jeans were dusted with white powder and his shirt sleeves rolled up. “Donna already headed over to the bakery. Can I help you?”

Tam flushed with guilt. “Um, no.” She couldn’t admit she’d come to ask about the peaches behind his back.

The ginger cat yawned lazily, and Tam gaped at the mouth full of sharp teeth. The saber-toothed tiger’s owner looked at her in curiosity as a second cat, a Siamese kitten, strolled up and rubbed against his ankle. “Nice fur babies,” Tam said, trying to figure out how to get peaches and avoid any contact with the cats. “I didn’t know Donna had animals.”

“They’re mine. They’re Butlers, too.”

“Interesting name.” He didn’t look like a butler. Her pulse skipped when he leaned one thick shoulder against the door.

Excerpt from Sunrise Reef

Was something burning?

Bren Ryan stopped reading the instructions on the tube of hair dye in her hand, destined for use later today, and frowned at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Sniffed.

A faint acrid odor with a hint of fishiness prickled her nose.

Not quite a burn smell but close. And definitely worth investigating.

Leaving the dye on the vanity, she followed the scent, wincing as another slash of lightning strobed through the sky outside the window, followed by a boom of bone-jarring thunder.

Man, this was bizarre weather. Squalls on the Oregon coast were supposed to be confined to the winter months. They never ushered in August—especially storms that went on for hours. Besides, even in the winter, torrential rain and high winds were far more common than lightning and thunder.

Whatever the cause of this uncharacteristic outburst from Mother Nature, it was certainly a dramatic beginning to her thirtieth birthday.

And perhaps it was also an omen that her decision to create a birthday resolution to-do list and shake things up a bit during this new decade of her life was sound.

The smell intensified as she approached the kitchen, and she paused on the threshold. Gave the room a slow scan.

Everything appeared to be normal.

Could the unpleasant odor be coming from outside?

Bren crossed to the window above the sink, pushed it higher than the scant inch she’d left it cracked, and leaned over. Inhaled.

The air outside was damp but fresh.

This was weird.

She straightened up and swiveled back toward the room.

Where could the smell be—

Wait.

Was that smoke coiling out of the electrical socket at the end of the counter?

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Some Like it Scot by Pepper Basham hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About Some Like it Scot

Title: Some Like it Scot Author: Pepper Basham Publisher: Thomas Nelson Release Date: April 8, 2025 Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

She lives her life on the fly. His heart is double-knotted to home. Can two different souls create a life together?

Popular travel writer and podcaster Katie Campbell roams the world collecting other people's stories. She's built a career as "Miss Adventure," known for saying yes to anything new--country, food, or experience--and predictably finding those adventures taking a downward turn into misadventures.

Offered the chance to explore her ancestral roots through a three-week Edwardian experience, Katie finds herself immersed in the beauty and eccentricity of Scotland. In her period attire, with traditional foods and activities, the opportunities for misadventures are endless, especially with the presence of a maniacal macaw, a jealous co-worker, and an all-too-surly Scotsman.

Reclusive and protective Graeme MacKerrow doesn't venture far from his island home. A stoic Scotsman, Graeme's comfort zone has always been family, and after his sister's death, he's even more determined to save the MacKerrow ancestral home and keep those he loves close. The sudden intrusion of a six-foot-one American lass, famous for her traveling misfortunes, was far from his plan.

As this world of folklore, community, and woodworkers-in-kilts tempts Katie to discover her own story, could this one grand series of misadventures lead her directly to where she belongs? And would a settled-in-Scot ever risk loosening his grip on what's familiar to allow a wanderlust writer a home in his heart? How could their very different worlds share the same page of life's story when "home" is in two very different places? But maybe home--and the future--isn't quite what either one imagined it would be. Maybe home is less about a place . . . and more about a person.

Excerpt from Some Like it Scot

Katie
There are some dresses that are flattering to more voluptuous figures.

After trying on four different Edwardian styles, I came to the conclusion that perhaps these weren’t those sorts of dresses.

Okay, not “perhaps”. Without a doubt. As my only high school boyfriend said, “Some girls are more like a guitar, but you are definitely a cello.”

Yeah, I dated one of those guys.

Needless to say, we didn’t date for long.

At any rate, the entire “cello” comment was coming back to haunt me as these dainty and elegant gowns found a hard time making it over the bottom of my cello. And since high school, I’d grown more into the top of my cello, so I had serious doubts about buttoning any shirtwaists too.

I rubbed at an aching spot on my temple and transferred my frustration into a chuckle.

From the shapes of these gowns, rich Edwardian women were flutes.

And this cello was definitely not playing the right song for Edwardian England.

Emily, the young maid who’d attempted to dress me, alerted Mrs. Lennox of the...unfitting. The matron arrived to find my bed littered with discarded gown options and me wearing a pink day dress that hit too high on my calf and left an embarrassing pucker at my chest. With another lift of those manicured brows of hers, she ran a palm over her now perfectly smooth hair. “Well, you certainly cannot present yourself before guests with any bit of credulity in such a fashion. No high-bred lady would be caught like…” She waved a palm toward me, her frown deepening. “That.”

It took me a full five seconds to comprehend her, but the intention rang as clear as her perfectly articulated diction. The little curl of her lip probably helped too.

“Which means you won’t be able to participate in our activities until you have an appropriate wardrobe.” She nodded, running her palm over her hair again. “It’s a very good thing you arrived early enough for us to solve this little dilemma.”

“You think you can?” I waved toward the bed and cringed a little at the mound of discarded gowns. “I could just watch from the sidelines.”

“No, of course not.” The words whipped out her. “You cannot fully appreciate the experience without actually participating. We have classes on everything from meal etiquette, to dancing, to the language of the fan.” Her hand rose in imitation of a fan opening. “This is a fully immersive program which requires complete participation. How can you fully critique our experience without comprehension saturation?”

Ah, so moving from cello analogies to…sponges?

The fire in her eyes took a teensy tip toward crazy. “Sidelines are not an option.”

Super. And fully immersive classes? Why did the idea stick somewhere in my mind between ‘run away’ and ‘most embarrassing moment of your life’?

I kind of got the “obsession” feel when Mrs. Lennox gave me a ten-page booklet on the Craighill Experience which covered house rules and Edwardian etiquette.

Including…how to appropriate handle romantic relationships.

I caught my snicker before it burst out. Cello, sponge, or not, I didn’t plan to meet my perfect match at some crazy baronial home dressed as a Downton Abbey character in the middle
of “nowhere” Scotland. Oh no, no! I didn’t need to compete with crazy in a relationship.

With a nod he was on his way.

And Tessa couldn’t help noticing Gina watching him retreat. After a moment, she turned her attention to Tessa, her expression suddenly serious. “Tessa, there’s something I feel like I need to say.”

With a fork full of mac and cheese in her right hand, Tessa reached for Molly with her left, her heart dropping. Had today brought back memories of coming to this same event with Nick? Was Gina upset? What if watching Dirk interact with her grandsons had reopened the wounds of her son’s death?

“You are a beautiful young woman,” Gina began. “And you deserve to find love again.”

Tessa nearly choked. “I’m sorry, what?”

“You heard me.” Her mother-in-law gave an emphatic nod.

“Gina, if this is about Dirk, he and I are just friends.”

The other woman looked across the patio to where Dirk stood holding a bowl of cobbler as he chatted with Bryce. “Hmph. What a shame.” She turned back to Tessa. “He’s quite the looker.”

Tessa stifled a chuckle. “Gina, what has gotten into you?”

“I don’t know.” The woman guffawed. “But isn’t it wonderful?”

About These Long Shadows

How do they rebuild a marriage that wasn’t real in the first place? If you love epic wartime romance with a dash of intrigue, you’ll love this second-chance, marriage-of-convenience love story.

London, 1945: Two years ago, Jonty Ables married Katie Baines to save her and her unborn baby from shame. But now the war is all but over, the baby is gone and they must work out where their shaky marriage fits into lives irrevocably changed by war.

Clinging to the memory of a time before all happiness evaporated, Katie works hard during the day as a seamstress. At night she comes home to a tiny terrace on a bomb-scarred street, crammed with her extended family and their problems. Years of estrangement sit between her and her recently demobilised husband. She’s not even sure she loves him. So why is she so crushed that he calls out another woman’s name in his sleep?

Jonty is determined to honor the vows he made no matter how many ghosts plague him. But with such separate lives, his wife is more of a stranger than ever. When Katie’s friend goes missing, Jonty seizes the opportunity to help her find him just so they have reason to talk. But the war casts long shadows over their efforts, and fighting for their future might just be the hardest battle of them all.

King’s Cross Station, London

Thursday, 4 July 1945

As the bitter taste of coal dried out her mouth, Katie Ables twisted the thin gold band on her left hand and watched the train pull up in a hiss of steam. She would have preferred to come to the station alone to see her husband again for the first time in almost two years. But her mother insisted on coming too.

“Don’t fidget, Katie.”

Katie hated being chided like she was a girl when she was, in fact, a married woman of almost twenty-two. But there wasn’t much she could do about it when she was still living with the woman. She dropped her hands, but her insides still twisted. Questions she’d already asked herself a thousand times wove through the nerves in her belly. Chief among them: What would happen when Jonty stepped off the train?

“Boys, keep your hands to yourselves.”

Mum had insisted on bringing Katie’s two youngest brothers, although Katie had no idea why. At eight and six, Davy and Tim could have no idea of the significance of the meeting. They were already bored after having to wait in line at a polling station this morning while she and Mum voted. Now the boys chased each other around the platform, narrowly missing luggage trolleys. Mum’s weary reprimands punctuated the sounds of comings and goings at the station.

“Are you sure he’ll be here?” Mum asked.

Yes. No. I don’t know.

Maybe he had changed his mind. Tightness rose from her belly into her chest. Forgetting that she had applied lipstick, she gnawed at her bottom lip, eyes tracing the alighting crowd for a flash of blue. But maybe he wouldn’t be wearing his uniform. She wasn’t even sure if he had been properly demobilized or not. Even in the clouds of smelly steam, he shouldn’t be hard to spot, with his scars and lopsided mouth.

“Boys. I’ve told you to stop, haven’t I?”

Katie only vaguely heard the chastisement. Her eye caught on an RAF uniform. Her heart rate escalated as the man moved closer.

It wasn’t Jonty.

She released the breath that had caught in her throat and tried to calm herself. She followed the airman long enough to see him drop his duffel bag and hold out his arms for a woman in a well-cut plum-colored suit to throw herself into them at a squealing run. They clung to each other for minutes on end, her head over his shoulder, before they found each other’s lips. They kissed long and deep, in full view of the whole station. Just like one of the novels that Mum read every night.

“Oh, how romantic.” Mum had seen it too, then.

A crashing sound behind her stole her attention away from her search. She spun around to see that her youngest brothers had somehow managed to topple over a luggage trolley.

“Boys! Behave!” Mum hurried over to help restack the trolley, apologizing to the glowering station attendant.

The boys stayed contrite for approximately two seconds before they began their games again, farther down the platform. Katie should help Mum right the fallen suitcases, but she turned back to scour the crowd for Jonty’s face. She took out his last letter from her coat pocket to double-check the details, even though she knew she was right where he’d told her to be.

Kings Cross station. Platform two. 11.30 a.m.

What if he didn’t come?

She prepared herself for the mortification of going home without him, for the conversation with Mum, for what she’d say to the rest of her siblings. “Katie?”

Jonty’s unmistakable accent came from behind her.

Time stopped.

Every muscle tightened. She took a deep breath to steady herself and turned toward his voice. For the first time ever, she was glad for his scars. She might not have recognized him otherwise. The scars on his neck seemed more pronounced than in her memory. They pulled his expression slightly to the left. Jonty had never been plump, but he’d lost even more weight since she’d last seen him. His uniform sat like it was on a hanger.

Of course he had changed. She had to. It had been almost two years since they’d buried the baby girl who had been their reason for marrying in the first place. Almost two years since that dreadful night when, numb in her grief, she’d screamed at him to leave and never come back.

Jonty moved first, shuffling to narrow the distance between them. His cheerful spirit used to fill his whole body, giving him the air of an irrepressible puppy. His slow steps now marked a stark contrast to the man she’d married. She didn’t throw herself into his arms. She worried she might knock him over.

His eyes searched hers, so intense she glanced at the ground to avoid them. “I’m glad you came, Katie-my-love.”

She hadn’t heard that in two years. Her throat tightened. She stiffened, fighting against the swirl of feelings inside her gut. She didn’t realize how much she’d missed the way he’d run the words together as though they were all part of her name. Like his love, the nickname hadn’t grown from anywhere. It was the result of his decision and determination––like stating a fact.

“Hello, Jonty.”

She tried her best to smile but wasn’t sure if she managed it. She’d conceived possible things to say last night, as she’d lain awake next to her younger sister. Practiced them under her breath as they’d trooped through the rubble to get from their home in Hackney to King’s Cross. But none of them came to her dry mouth now. She bit the inside of her lip. It had been so long since she had thought about the future with any hope that she didn’t even try to now.

“It’s good to have you home.”

She tried with all her heart to mean what she said.

Finding clues in funeral condolence cards and decades-old gossip dredged up at the Blue Moon Beauty Emporium, the two stir up trouble faster than you can say "pecan pie."

Read an Excerpt from Grandma Ruth Doesn’t Go To Funerals

Grandma Ruth doesn’t go to funerals.

It’s not that she gets squeamish or weak-kneed at the sight of a friend or relative laid out. She takes an avid interest in every detail of the deceased, from the tie they put on third cousin twice removed Billy Ray to how Harriet Tilson’s hair turned out. Nor is it that she lacks respect for those who have gone on to glory before her. Grandma Ruth is the kind of person to whom you do not criticize your mother. And it’s not that she prefers to stay at home and watch Jeopardy! Instead. Grandma Ruth is bedridden—has been for the past three years. Much as she would like to, Grandma Ruth isn’t going anywhere.

I am Sarah Elizabeth, Grandma Ruth’s favorite granddaughter. Being her favorite is a dubious honor. It means I’m her favorite to go to the store and buy birthday cards, visit her shut-in friends, and, you guessed it, attend funerals in her place.

Looking back, I realize I’ve been training for funeral duty for quite a while. When I was ten, she taught me how to make macaroni and cheese from scratch to take by the home of the bereaved for the reception. By the time I was eleven, I had learned to write a tasteful and heartfelt condolence note. I attended my first funeral at twelve. (Grandma Ruth wanted to take me sooner, but Mama put her foot down and prevailed for once.) Now that I’m twenty-four, Grandma Ruth considers me not only fully qualified but socially obligated to take her place since she can’t get out anymore. I don’t think I’ve missed a single funeral in Raeburne’s Ferry, Georgia, since she took to her bed.
