“I’m sorry I’ve been behaving like a jerk.”

The corners of her pretty mouth tilted upward. “Oh.” Dropping her arms, she shifted from one sneaker-clad foot to the next. “In that case, please, go on.”

“You’ve brought something to Shepard’s life that he’s never really had.”

Her brow puckered. “Such as…?”

“The way you interact with him. You treat him as if he’s special. That his thoughts and opinions matter.”

“That’s just common decency, Ryder. You know, the whole ‘do unto others.’”

“Yes, but he rarely got that from his mother.”

“What does that have to do with you behaving like a jerk?” One eyebrow arched in a playful manner.

He stretched out his arms before clasping his hands atop his head, knowing what he was about to say was going to make him look even worse.

“I was afraid he’d get attached to you only to be disappointed when you leave.” There, he said it.

“Maybe you need a husband.”

A what now?

Thatcher’s attempt to lighten the mood by making a goofy joke wasn’t funny. He had no way of knowing how unhappy her marriage had been, though, so she tried to keep her tone light. “If you’re trying to be humorous, stick to knock-knock jokes.”

“I’m serious.” His stare was so intense he didn’t even blink. “Marriage could solve some of your problems immediately.”

“And create a heap more.” She’d already had a husband, and he’d left her with nothing. It was time to make it clear to Thatcher that this topic of conversation was officially closed. “I heard about Beatie and Dutch playing matchmaker with Sadie and Mick, but I didn’t expect it from you, too. Now, I’m going to take this salad out to the dining room and we can forget this conversation ever happened.” She gathered the glass bowl and turned away.

“What if it’s me?”

She stopped. Rotated back to face him. “What did you say?”

He looked her straight in the eye, his cocoa-dark eyes soft. “You could marry me, Bliss.”

The dish slipped from her hands and shattered at her feet.

An Excerpt from Mistletoe and Malice

So far, it was as awful as she’d imagined it would be.

While her parents’ driver from Petersen sat at the back of the church, her shadows, as she’d taken to calling them, had stationed themselves at various points around the sanctuary. And if that weren’t embarrassing enough, Mr. Blankenship walked her all the way in, his head swiveling as if someone might spring out of their seat at any second and carry her away.

She put her hand to her forehead. She understood they were doing their job. She just hated being the job.

She opened her eyes and found Mr. Blankenship standing in the aisle between the wall and the pew, his eyes panning back and forth across the congregation.

“Aren’t you going to sit?” she asked in a stage whisper.

He glanced at her and resumed his scan. “Not standard protocol.”

“I don’t care. You’re embarrassing me to death. Sit down.”

With a frown, he gave her another glance but continued to stand there, like one of those motionless guards at Buckingham Palace. She smiled a little inside, picturing him with one of those oversized bearskin hats on his head.

“Do you seriously think anybody would try something with you right next to me? Please. Can you sit?”

With a sigh, he finally moved into the pew next to her.

“Much better. You almost look normal.” As normal as he could with the obvious earpiece and his ever-watchful, cold-as-ice glower.

The corner of his mouth hitched upward ever so slightly.

Maybe there was some thaw under there, after all.

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Echoes of a Silent Song by Amanda Wen, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About Echoes of a Silent Song

Title: Echoes of a Silent Song Series: Melodies and Memories #1 Author: Amanda Wen Publisher: Kregel Publications Release Date: October 21, 2025 Genre: Split-time Romance

A split-time romance from an award-winning author

When a choral composer and conductor falls victim to creative block, he resorts to his fallback plan of teaching high school choir. Callum Knight’s goal at Peterson High is simple: rediscover his muse, extract himself from teaching, and get back to Boston as quickly as possible.

As the long-suffering accompanist at the high school, Peterson-native Blair Emerson has watched the revolving door of choir directors and their negative impact on her choirs over the last few years. She is less than impressed when a disheveled Callum stumbles in on his first day.

But then they discover an unsigned, unfinished, and handwritten choral composition by a clear musical genius. Blair recalls rumors of Iris, a Peterson student from the 1970s who composed music but was found dead during her senior year. Blair and Callum work to determine if the piece is hers, and the truth they uncover shakes both of them to the core.

With rhythm and flair, Amanda Wen takes readers on an unexpected journey into the depths of a small town’s history in this riveting first book in the Melodies and Memories duology.

An Excerpt from Echoes of a Silent Song

September 1969

There. Finally. The assignment for music theory was done. I tore it from my spiral notebook of manuscript paper. Oops. Almost forgot to put my name on it. That would’ve been a silly ten points to lose. With a flourish, I scribbled my name in the upper right-hand corner,  then walked to the front and put the assignment in the wire basket on Mr. Gilbert’s desk. He glanced up, brows arched over his black plastic glasses. Small wonder, since there were still twenty minutes before the bell. Everyone else still hunched over their desks, pencils dancing.

“Thank you, Iris,” Mr. Gilbert said. “Just find something else to work on until the end of class.”

With pleasure. Trying not to smile, I practically skipped back to my spot, then flung myself into my seat, and turned in my notebook to the thing I really cared about. The piece that had invaded two days ago and taken me over body, mind, and soul. The melody God sent had filled my heart, my head, almost to the point of making it impossible to finish that theory assignment.

But I’d finally finished, and I had twenty minutes— twenty precious minutes— to devote to my own music. Thank you, God. My pencil scratched across the page. My hand trembled, frantic to keep up with the stream of notes in my heart. Composing was sometimes like this for me. The music seemed to exist outside space. Outside time. It was like God had held it there, fully formed, and chose me to bring it into the world. I’d feel him watching me, beaming as I scribbled notes onto the paper, bringing the music to life. I’d feel his joy as I composed. Writing music was an honor.

But if I was being brutally honest, sometimes the pressure of the melody, the urgency to get it out of me . . . sometimes it felt like a bit of a curse too.

The phrase ended, and the melody was kind enough to pause so I could sketch out a few harmonies. Just to remind myself what I heard. Bare bones now, but I could fill them in later. Harmony was far more patient with me, but Melody stood there, arms crossed, foot tapping, eager to share more with me.

One second, Melody. Harmony needs my attention for a bit. Just need to fill in these—

“I thought we weren’t supposed to use parallel fifths.”

A voice interrupted the music. A shadow fell across my desk. The chords in my head shattered, almost audibly. My neck grew hot, and my heart leaped into my throat.

Victor stood at my desk, his gaze fastened on my paper. My notes. My melody. My harmony.

I flung my arm across the composition. Had the lunch bell already rung? It must have, since the other students were gathering their things and heading toward the door.

How long had he been standing there? How much had he seen?

“That’s some incredible voice leading, though.” He seemed undaunted. He slid into the desk next to mine, his eyes fixed on the spot my arm hadn’t covered. He kept his volume low. “I love what you’re doing in the alto line. That E- flat major chord . . . it’s beautiful.” “Oh, it’s just . . . this is . . . it’s nothing.”

“It’s not nothing.” Victor reached over and touched my paper.

Touched it.

My grip tightened. “Please don’t touch that.”

Victor’s long, slender fingers slid off my paper and I could breathe again, but he didn’t angle away. He was so close I could feel the warmth of his body. Smell whatever aftershave he used. It was strong— all scents were— but not unpleasant.

An Excerpt From The Heart of Bennet Hollow

Lizbeth Bennet clutched the handle of the wicker basket with hope. The same hope with which she’d gathered each and every wildflower within. Slipping inside the farmhouse, she traded the brightness of day for the dim light of Ma’s kitchen—the very heartbeat of Bennet Hollow.

“Did you spot the new train car, by chance?” Jayne asked from the table, her voice as soft and mountain grown as a wild birch grove. “They say it’s called the Pemberley.”

Lizbeth lowered the basket to the table and handed a sprig of lacy white yarrow to her older sister. “I didn’t wander far enough. Have you seen it yourself? This Pemberley?” Having just come in from the sunny garden, she brushed her hands clean and sat. “Clearly I’ve missed the gossip.”

“I saw it when I walked into town this mornin’.” Jayne examined the contents of the basket. Her golden hair was bound up in rag curlers, and a single band of gray twine wrapped her pale wrist, holding a tiny nugget of violet amethyst that Pa, a geologist, had unearthed in a mine. “It’s the prettiest sight, Lizzy. Brighter than a new penny perched there right on the track.”

Lizbeth rolled back the sleeves of her striped work dress and tried to imagine such a view. A breeze blew cool against her bare neck from the open window, causing her homespun collar to flutter. Her sisters had been on the lookout ever since some weeks back, when the owner of the New River Coal Company had announced his coming guests—a slew of coal barons and investors, all eager to bid on the property that was now for sale.

And the best part of all among the Bennet sisters . . . the dance that would mark their arrivals.

An Excerpt from Their Texas Christmas Redemption

On the far side of the fireplace, a slim Christmas tree with white lights, red-and-black buffalo check ribbon, and silver and red ornaments glowed in the corner. The mantle was also adorned with evergreen, lights and pinecones, while two stockings—one red-and-black buffalo check and the other white-and-gray buffalo check with Willow written on the white fur in silver lettering—dangled from its edge.

For a moment, Tyler’s heart stopped beating, only to pound a moment later. The absolute wonder of it all had him feeling like a kid on Christmas morning. Not that he knew how that felt. But he’d spent years imagining.

He shoved a hand through his hair. “What is all this?”

Now holding Willow, Audrey moved beside him. “I couldn’t bear the thought of you not having a Christmas tree, so this is an early Christmas present for you and Willow.” He started to interrupt her, but she held up a hand. “I know, Thanksgiving is still six days away, and you’ll probably be gone before Christmas, but selfishly, I wanted to see how it all looked.” Admiring her handiwork, she added, “I saved all the boxes so you can take everything back to Fort Worth and set it up there. Oh, and all the ornaments are plastic, so you won’t have to worry about Willow breaking any of them. Later, that is. When she’s mobile.”

He stared at her, wondering how he could have let her go.
