Even if nothing else is certain … love still is. Ruby Foster loves her job as a Pack Horse librarian, but secretly she dreams of being a nurse. Since there are no schools for nursing in the hills of rural Kentucky in 1937, Ruby contents herself with harvesting medicinal plants, delivering her beloved library books, and dreaming. Dreaming mostly of a life that doesn’t leave her living in the past. Until one day she discovers that “past” camped out by the Hell for Certain creek. Could it really be Cole, the one who left her heartbroken so many years ago? Just when she starts to believe in her dreams and hope for love again, Cole reveals his true colors. Or is the truth she sees only another illusion? When nothing else in the world seems certain, can the bonds of friendship bring one searching heart and one lost soul together again? Amy, what is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?
I don’t always consider myself an interesting person, but I’ve got a few quirks. I always, always, always, put on my left shoe first. If I see the right one first, I’ll kick it aside and put on the left. I’m not positive, but I might be keeping the world spinning by doing this. Also, I don’t know the correct way to type. I’m from a time long long ago where they taught typing in high school but I always took theater instead. My hunt-and-peck typing has picked up speed over the years and I can mostly type without looking and mostly as fast as I’m thinking. Also, I’m a bad speller. Some of this doesn’t seem to add up to “writer” but then again, God’s got a good sense of humor.
I love your perspective on God’s sense of humor!
What does a day in the life of your characters look like?
This novel is set in 1937 rural Kentucky towards the “end” of the Great Depression. I put end in quotes because this area was “depressed” before the depression and many parts of the area struggle to this day. However I chose to write less about the woes of the depression and more about the resilience of the people. Some amazing things were happening in this area at that time and you’ll see those in this book: the packhorse librarians and the frontier nursing service. The characters in my book spend their days getting by, praising God, loving their families and trying to find the best there is in life no matter their circumstances. Also, they spend a lot of time delivering books to people hungry for words!
I find these topics fascinating to read about, though I can’t imagine living through them.
What was the inspiration behind your story?
I was actually “given” the topic of the Pack Horse Librarians by an editor friend. I had never heard of them. While I was researching the first book, The Other Side of Certain, I discovered there were a couple of books out about the librarians already. They’re so amazing that I’m surprised there aren’t tons of books out. This is a “Book 2”, but it’s a stand alone in the same world, so it’s easy to jump in here. I liken it to old school TV before streaming where you could come in on season 4 and still totally get what was happening. This book is also inspired by the Frontier Nursing Service, which was nurses on horseback. This area of the country was really excelling in serving the needs of its people even in the region’s most difficult times.
That’s amazing!
What did you learn while writing this story?
That women are pretty awesome. Ok, I knew that already, but I was just really impressed with the history of this area of eastern Kentucky and everything they were doing to improve the lives of the people. I learned a lot about medical plants, old medical books, really old printing presses, how to deliver a breech born baby, how to make my own soap, and all sorts of things!
How awesome indeed!
What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?
That it’s never too late to “come home.” To believe in your own worth in God’s eyes and in the hearts of the people who love you. Not to give up on happiness and to forgive yourself when others, especially God, has forgiven you. That you are loved by God no matter what!
I love this.
