About Today's Currated List

I’m closing in on THE END of my latest work-in-progress, so here’s a behind-the-scenes peek at a few things that help me cross the finish line.

List

Tea ... Lots of Tea

Tea is my beverage of choice. When time allows, I’ll brew a huge pot, cover it with a cozy, and keep refilling my teacup to keep my tea warm.

My favorite tea is Twinings Chai Black Tea, though sometimes I’ll brew my own chai blend.  I also love Earl Grey and Irish Breakfast. Make it a latte and it’s amazing!

Noise ... Yes, Noise

If it’s too quiet, my mind wanders from its task. Truly. Just as my mom. I would do my homework with white noise, at the bare minimum.

Now my children are my usual background soundtrack, but if not, then I turn on the Outlaw Country and hum along. Nothing like a little Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson to get the creativity flowing!

Movement ... in Nature

I cannot sit at a desk for long, so dictation has become a helpful ally. I can take my phone outside and record while I stroll.

Whether in the backyard or along the lake, a little green or blue goes a long way to spurring my inspiration. Then I’m ready to get back to my computer and turn my dictated words into a story.

Sheltered by the Doctor

Welcome to Wednesday Waypoints, a weekly pause to step into a brief moment from my stories. Each post shares a carefully chosen excerpt paired with a few cozy touches that reflect its mood or meaning. It’s a chance to slow down midweek and find a little encouragement rooted in the 1930s world I write.

About Title

Harbored in Crow's Nest 5 - Sheltered by the Doctor

A fake relationship might keep her safe, but will it break their hearts?

Wisconsin, 1931—Mindy Zahn can’t understand why her parents deserted the family farm, leaving her mute younger sister in her care. Until her mother’s cryptic warning to keep her sister safe becomes a life-threatening task.

Searching for that elusive something to ease his weary heart, Dr. Nick Matrone is drawn to the cheery Mindy. He would never presume to bring such a sweet woman into his beleaguered past, so friendship is all he can offer. Except, he doesn’t expect needing to save her life.

As the danger grows, they both must battle through physical and emotional wounds to have a hope of their counterfeit relationship becoming true.

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.

An Excerpt From Title

Within minutes, she was wrapped up in nursing care. She’d never seen so many people succumb to the heat as they had today. The old timers couldn’t remember the temperature ever getting over 100 degrees. Ever. They all commented on it.

“There was that June in 1910.” One of the older fishermen said later that afternoon as Mindy counted his pulse and Nick used his stethoscope to listen to the man’s labored breathing. “And 1911. Got close to one hundred that year. What Martins said, that the official temperature was 101 … That true?”

“According to both the Weather Bureau and the U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries.” Mindy handed the older man a cup of water. “Adaleigh filled me in.”

“Smart girl, that one.” The fisherman coughed, ending on a wheeze. “She’d know.”

Nick wiped his forehead with his cuff. “Never been this hot before? It’s not even July or August yet. No wonder so many cannot handle this type of heat. Doesn’t bode well.”

He said that last bit as a mutter under his breath, but Mindy caught it?. Agreed.

“Seems you are having an asthmatic attack.” Nick looked at Mindy. “Have a waitress make him a cup of strong black tea.”

“Hate that stuff,” the fisherman groused.

“But it will help you.” Mindy tucked her arm around the older man to help him to his feet.

To Stand in the Breach

Welcome to Wednesday Waypoints, a weekly pause to step into a brief moment from my stories. Each post shares a carefully chosen excerpt paired with a few cozy touches that reflect its mood or meaning. It’s a chance to slow down midweek and find a little encouragement rooted in the 1930s world I write.

About To Stand in the Breach

She came to America to escape a workhouse prison, but will the cost of freedom be too high a price to pay?

1933, Wisconsin – Large animal veterinarian Katy Wells takes her patients’ welfare personally, so it’s no surprise when she stands up to angry farmers planning a milk strike or takes in an injured draft horse to save its life. But after a visitor from the past discovers her location and reveals a threat, she must choose between her work and her freedom, and whether to trust a man to keep her safe.

An Excerpt From To Stand in the Breach

Och, why had she opened the letter before the farmers’ meeting? She needed every ounce of her courage to stand up in front of all those men. If only that New York newspaper hadn’t published an article on the handful of female veterinarians who had graduated from Cornell in the last couple decades. The reporter focused on the first woman in America, who had received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine just twenty-three years ago, but mentioned other graduates as well. Graduates like Katy. That must be the way her uncle had tracked her to Wisconsin.

She pushed from the wall, carefully folding the letter before tucking it into her medical bag. Then she smoothed the gray fabric of her skirt, as if that action could smooth her troubled heart. She needed to put the letter, her uncle, and her past out of her mind. This afternoon’s meeting was not about her. In fact, knowing these farmers as she did, they likely wouldn’t appreciate her interrupting their meeting. Normally, she’d happily leave them to their own devices. She’d rather face down an ornery bull than walk the gauntlet of men inside.

But this meeting affected her patients, which meant she needed to speak up.

A Strike to the Heart

Welcome to Wednesday Waypoints, a weekly pause to step into a brief moment from my stories. Each post shares a carefully chosen excerpt paired with a few cozy touches that reflect its mood or meaning. It’s a chance to slow down midweek and find a little encouragement rooted in the 1930s world I write.

About A Strike to the Heart

She’s fiercely independent. He’s determined to protect her.

Wisconsin, 1933–When a routine mission becomes an ambush that kills his team, Craft Agency sniper Miles Wright determines to find the persons responsible and protect the woman he rescued. But the fierce independence that led Lily Moore to leave her family’s dairy business for the solitary life of a dog trainer and the isolation of her farm don’t make that easy. Neither does his unwanted attraction to her. Meanwhile, escalating incidents confirm that she’s far from safe.

Lily fears letting the surprisingly gentle retired marine into her life almost as much as she fears whoever is threatening her. As Wisconsin farmers edge toward another milk strike, one that will surely turn violent, it becomes clear that the plot against Lily may be part of a much larger conspiracy. When the search for her abductor leads close to home, she must decide whether to trust her family or the man who saved her life.

An Excerpt From A Strike to the Heart

Huddled under the bush, the damp ground spread a chill through her body despite Mr. Wright’s coat. She pulled the woolen fabric tighter around her shoulders. It smelled of smoke and pine, a comforting smell that did little to ease her worry. If Mr. Wright didn’t come back soon, she’d be in trouble. And if he didn’t come back at all?

He would. He had to. She couldn’t rescue herself if she had no way of knowing which direction led to safety.

She strained to listen. Couldn’t hear past the rushing in her ears and the erratic beat of her heart. Her teeth threatened to chatter. She couldn’t make a sound, or the bad guys—whoever they were—would find her.

Noiselessly, she curled into a ball. One breath in. Nice and slow. One breath out. Not too fast. She pictured herself cuddled on her couch back home, her two dogs battling for room on her lap. A fire roaring in the fireplace. Stars dancing above her father’s cornfields. Home. The best place on earth.
