About Echoes of Darkness

A serial killer stalks a small town, and a police officer must face her family’s dark past to catch him.
The sleepy community of Kenorapeake Falls in northern Ontario seems like somewhere Constable Oaklynn Brock can finally outrun her violent past. That is, until she’s assigned to investigate a series of suspicious deaths. She can’t reveal that she knows how serial killers think because she grew up with one. Yet the eerie similarities between these murders and those committed by her father, known as the Suicide Slayer, hint at a copycat in their midst. But why here and why now?
Caleb Greene of the Canadian Watchers Squad, a special task force, has his own reasons to be wary of working alongside Oaklynn. But with rumors of a local cult known as the Light Paragons gaining power, the stakes are too high to refuse.
As they explore connections between the killings and cult, Oaklynn and Caleb are forced to confront old secrets…and a terrifying new threat. Someone is watching Oaklynn’s every move. They know exactly who she is and what she might be capable of. And soon her biggest fear isn’t just having her past exposed, but that a killer will turn whatever days she has left into a living nightmare…

One Light in the Darkness: Shining for Christ in a Broken World
Have you ever stepped into a pitch-black room where you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face? Darkness that thick presses in. It disorients. It isolates. But the moment you flip the switch—or strike a match—the smallest flicker of light pushes the shadows back. Isn’t it amazing how just one light can make such a difference?
That’s the image God kept bringing to mind when I wrote Echoes of Darkness. In a world saturated with evil, corruption, and pain, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Discouraged. Helpless. But God reminded me of a powerful truth: one light—His light—shining through us is enough to pierce even the deepest darkness.
The Spark Behind the Story
The inspiration for the theme of Echoes of Darkness began with a single verse:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
—John 1:5 (ESV)
I’ve always loved this verse and I began to think about what that kind of light looks like in real life. Not just a metaphorical glow—but real, sacrificial, gritty light that stands firm when evil closes in. Light that echoes hope even in the darkest places.
That was one of the seeds.
What if a character was forced to confront not only the darkness around her but the darkness within—memories she couldn’t face, secrets long buried, and a horrific past she thought she’d escaped? What if her greatest fear wasn’t the evil she uncovered, but the possibility that she might be connected to it?
Add a chilling copycat killer and a disturbing cult—and Echoes of Darkness was born.
But it didn’t stop there. God used the process of writing this story to dig deep into my heart too.
Lessons in the Writing
I’ve always believed God teaches us as we write, and this book was no exception. As I walked with my heroine, Oaklynn Brock, through her struggles—grappling with identity, betrayal, and fear—I found myself facing my own questions. Do I trust God when the shadows fall? Do I believe His light is enough for the darkness around me?
One spiritual truth I clung to while writing this story was this: God’s presence is not absent in the dark—it’s often most visible there. Just like a star shines brightest in the night sky, our faith becomes more powerful when lived out in hard places.
Personally, this story challenged me to stop shrinking back from the darkness in the world. It’s tempting to turn off the news, close our doors, and hide from the brokenness. But God never called us to be hidden. He called us to shine.
Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” That’s not a polite suggestion. It’s a commission.
What I Hope You Take Away
More than anything, I hope readers walk away from Echoes of Darkness encouraged to be that one light. The world is loud and chaotic, yes. But God placed us here for a purpose. Right now. In this season. In that workplace, that neighborhood, that family.
Sometimes we may feel like our light is small. Insignificant. Flickering. But here’s the truth Oaklynn and Caleb had to learn—and I believe it’s for us too:
One obedient heart can shine brighter than a thousand empty words.
In the story, Oaklynn is just trying to survive. She’s thrust into a nightmare she didn’t choose, chased by a killer, and haunted by the idea that everything she believed about herself might be a lie. But through it all, she learns that her past doesn’t define her—God does. And even in her brokenness, He can use her to bring truth into the light.
That’s the message at the core of this book. God can redeem even the darkest past, and He can use us to reflect His light right where we are.
Our light matters.
Let’s keep shining.
No darkness can snuff out His light.
