About Heart of Faith

When two boys who arrive in Missouri on the famed Orphan Train are left behind at the station, bake shop owner Amy Montgomery vows to make a home for them. She wants the boys to have a family for Christmas—but first she must convince former Pinkerton agent John Oliver to marry her.
John Oliver only left the Adirondack town of Heartston, NY for Missouri to make sure Amy stayed safe as she began her new life in a new town. He has no intention of becoming part of a makeshift family. When he realizes the orphaned boys could be in danger, he decides helping Amy may be the only way to save them.
Will they become the family she has been praying for in time for Amy to get her Christmas wish?

I think one of the hardest things in life is to take a chance. Take a chance on trying something new or doing an old thing a new way. Or taking a chance on a friendship…. or taking a chance on beginning your life anew.
For me it was taking a chance on writing a Christmas novella and being part of a multi-author collaboration. You see I had been on a four-year writing hiatus. Life happened. Covid happened. And I found myself frozen. I admit I’d lost faith in my ability to create. I feared that I would never be able to write again. That was a hard truth for me to digest.
When the opportunity came along to be a part of this project, I said a prayer and took a chance. And low and behold I found myself plotting scenes and developing characters. I took a chance and found my joy again.
In my Christmas story, Heart of Faith, former Pinkerton Agent John Oliver, and baker, Amy Mitchell finally get their own book. They were part of my Adirondack Pinkerton series. I took another chance and brought them into the Hearts of the West world. It’s funny how one thing always seems to lead to another when plotting and writing a new story. I always have my idea of what the book will look like. And then, don’t you know, my muse comes up with twists and turns that I didn’t see coming.
Amy and John take quite a few chances in their story. They become involved in an orphan train. I hadn’t considered writing about the orphan trains. I was going to write about my Pinkerton agent and the baker. But somehow in my research I came across an article about those orphan trains and I knew that subject would end up in my book. Between 1854 and 1929 over 200,000 children were sent from east coast cities to the farmland of the west. Some called this a social experiment; others called this the first foster homes. I couldn’t imagine what those children endured.
In Heart of Faith two orphaned brothers find themselves in the care of John and Amy. My little makeshift family struggles to find their way in the vast land of Missouri. And speaking of Missouri this was a new to me setting. You might say I took another chance! Most of my books are set in New York State. I love writing about the area I grew up in. Places I vacationed at with my husband and sons. The Adirondack Mountains where we camped, the Catskill Mountains where my grandparents lived and the southern tier where the Amish communities thrive. But again, this opportunity came along to write a story set west of the Mississippi. And in my favorite genre; historical romance.
Just like real life, John and Amy’s lives take on some twists and turns. Their faith is tested. I know we’ve all been there. For me writing about faith is an important part of my life. I like to use my stories to share my faith journey through my character’s actions and words. I hope that my little story will bring you a sense of joy and renewed faith. It gives me great pleasure to bring my words to new to me readers. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you for spending a little time learning more about me and my writing.
