About Heart's Promise

Welcome back to Jacob and Julia’s Iowa farm.

In 1893, their son Justin is eleven. and daughter Annaliese is ten. When Jacob and Julia adopted Annaliese as an infant, they were told God had a special plan for her. As Annaliese grows up, she wonders if her purpose will be world-changing.

Julia’s old friend, Edward Harrington, comes to visit from England, along with his wife and son, Robbie. Their time at the farm is the beginning of a like/hate relationship and later something more between Robbie and Annaliese. When the families traveled to San Francisco in 1900, a shocking revelation from Edward’s wife could change everything, beginning with taking Annaliese to England.

If this is God’s plan, Annaliese is disappointed. It’s nothing like she imagined, and her heart’s desire is to go to veterinary college. This could mean a very different future for her.

Thank you for hosting me on your blog, Danielle. I’m excited to share about my new book. Heart’s Promise, set in 1900, is book three in the Heart’s Desire series, but I believe readers will be fine starting here. This is the book in the series where the children of earlier characters, Annaliese and Robbie, have grown up and taken the spotlight. Their families take a trip to San Francisco which means riding on the Intercontinental railroad. They were able to do that in a Pullman Palace car, referred to by many as a hotel on wheels. Robbie has always been enamored with Annaliese, but she has only thought of him as obnoxious and annoying. On a journey where everyone is in close quarters for several days, Annaliese begins to see maybe he has matured. Then this scene with Annaliese’s brother Justin, her, Robbie and Robbie’s sister happens. He will have some work to do.

Annaliese turned to see how Justin and Robbie were doing with their chess match. They were still bent over the board on the table between them, but Robbie appeared agitated. He rubbed the back of his neck and blew out a breath, while Justin’s hands were folded loosely on the table. A few minutes passed before Justin said, “You might as well concede. I have your king in check and there’s nothing you can do to escape.”

Robbie slumped back against his chair. “Alright. You win, but I’ll challenge you again later. Right now, my brain is too tired to think.”

Justin chuckled as they reset the pieces. Eveline went and stood beside Robbie with her hand on his shoulder. “Since your brain is tired, how about a game of Old Maid with the girls?”

“Ha!” Robbie turned to his sister. “You don’t even need a brain to play that, so I should be good to go.” He shifted his focus to Justin. “We can play cards with the girls for a while then get back to the manly game of chess.”

Annaliese told herself Robbie was only teasing about chess being a manly game, but a part of her didn’t want to let it go. As they all moved to the dining table, she casually posed her question. “Robbie, are you saying girls can’t play chess?”

His eyes widened. “No, not at all. Anyone can play, but the female brain isn’t capable of thinking the way a man does. Understanding rules and the strategy of the game are beyond the fairer sex.”

Even though I’ve been to San Francisco, I needed to find out what it looked like in 1900. Thankfully, there are many pictures and articles online to answer that question. It was fun to learn they had amusement park-style rides then as well as many other tourist attractions. The Golden Gate Bridge hadn’t been built yet, but there was a Golden Gate Park with many things to see and do. Some of the things I talk about the characters visiting at the park weren’t there until the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. The Japanese Tea Garden and Tea House are two of them. They feature big in the story, so Readers, I hope you’ll forgive me for borrowing from the future. Be on the lookout for that scene.

Another part of the story is set in England. At that time an ocean liner was the only way to travel from the United States to England. In my research, I learned there were several different cruise lines competing for customers. Even though they were first of all a means of transportation they went all out to entertain and make the passengers comfortable, especially the wealthy ones. It made me think of today’s cruise ships. A nice feature was the possibility of a starlight walk on the deck.

I had to depend on the internet to know what the characters saw in England. When they got there, they took a train from London to Nottinghamshire where Robbie’s family lives. I’m going to tour the British Isles this summer and was excited to learn we’ll be riding a train through Nottinghamshire. Along with sights in London, I can look out the train window and imagine what my characters might have seen going through the countryside one hundred twenty-five years ago.

Heart’s Promise brings me to the end of my initial overall plan. I’m reluctant to call it a trilogy because there are so many interesting side characters who would make a good story. I’m keeping that thought in the back of my mind. Each story has been fun to write, but my main purpose in writing any of them is to honor God. I hope to encourage readers to trust him. You can depend on him because he is faithful.

One Light in the Darkness: Shining for Christ in a Broken World

Have you ever stepped into a pitch-black room where you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face? Darkness that thick presses in. It disorients. It isolates. But the moment you flip the switch—or strike a match—the smallest flicker of light pushes the shadows back. Isn’t it amazing how just one light can make such a difference?

That’s the image God kept bringing to mind when I wrote Echoes of Darkness. In a world saturated with evil, corruption, and pain, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Discouraged. Helpless. But God reminded me of a powerful truth: one light—His light—shining through us is enough to pierce even the deepest darkness.

The Spark Behind the Story

The inspiration for the theme of Echoes of Darkness began with a single verse:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
—John 1:5 (ESV)

I’ve always loved this verse and I began to think about what that kind of light looks like in real life. Not just a metaphorical glow—but real, sacrificial, gritty light that stands firm when evil closes in. Light that echoes hope even in the darkest places.

That was one of the seeds.

What if a character was forced to confront not only the darkness around her but the darkness within—memories she couldn’t face, secrets long buried, and a horrific past she thought she’d escaped? What if her greatest fear wasn’t the evil she uncovered, but the possibility that she might be connected to it?

Add a chilling copycat killer and a disturbing cult—and Echoes of Darkness was born.

But it didn’t stop there. God used the process of writing this story to dig deep into my heart too.

Lessons in the Writing

I’ve always believed God teaches us as we write, and this book was no exception. As I walked with my heroine, Oaklynn Brock, through her struggles—grappling with identity, betrayal, and fear—I found myself facing my own questions. Do I trust God when the shadows fall? Do I believe His light is enough for the darkness around me?

One spiritual truth I clung to while writing this story was this: God’s presence is not absent in the dark—it’s often most visible there. Just like a star shines brightest in the night sky, our faith becomes more powerful when lived out in hard places.

Personally, this story challenged me to stop shrinking back from the darkness in the world. It’s tempting to turn off the news, close our doors, and hide from the brokenness. But God never called us to be hidden. He called us to shine.

Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” That’s not a polite suggestion. It’s a commission.

What I Hope You Take Away

More than anything, I hope readers walk away from Echoes of Darkness encouraged to be that one light. The world is loud and chaotic, yes. But God placed us here for a purpose. Right now. In this season. In that workplace, that neighborhood, that family.

Sometimes we may feel like our light is small. Insignificant. Flickering. But here’s the truth Oaklynn and Caleb had to learn—and I believe it’s for us too:

One obedient heart can shine brighter than a thousand empty words.

In the story, Oaklynn is just trying to survive. She’s thrust into a nightmare she didn’t choose, chased by a killer, and haunted by the idea that everything she believed about herself might be a lie. But through it all, she learns that her past doesn’t define her—God does. And even in her brokenness, He can use her to bring truth into the light.

That’s the message at the core of this book. God can redeem even the darkest past, and He can use us to reflect His light right where we are.

Our light matters.

Let’s keep shining.

No darkness can snuff out His light.

About Jessica Stone

Jessica Stone

Despite her start as a journalist for a faith-based news publication two decades ago, Jessica Stone has always loved fiction. She believes that her testimony and message come most clearly through storytelling, and she loves the process of developing deep—and deeply flawed—characters who find redemption and learn to accept grace, just as she is herself. Jessica and her husband reside in Raleigh, North Carolina, near her parents and other family. This story—and her confidence to write it—were inspired by her own Gilmore Girls-esque relationship with her daughter, who is living out her dreams as a fashion designer in Paris. Guest Post by Jessica Stone

Beauty in the Bittersweet is the first book in my A Thornbush and Juniper Story series. The series follows four women who are all part of the music scene in Nashville, Tennessee. Each of the four are introduced in this first book through Elle, whose life intersects with theirs at some point.

I am one of those music lovers who doesn’t have even a twinge of musical talent, so some may find my decision to center this series around Nashville to be a risky move. Fortunately, I have several friends who are a part of the business and were willing to let me follow them around, meet their friends, and host my daughter and me during our many trips to Music City for research. With their help, I was able to come close to providing a glimpse into Nashville’s music scene and the lives of a tour manager, a cellist with the symphony, a break-out music star or two, and my main character in book one, who works for a music publishing house.

Although the story began with me personally in Catherine–the mother’s–shoes more than anything, it has been pointed out to me that I’m similar to her daughter, Elle, in a lot of ways. The premise of this book was originally inspired by my own near death experience when my daughter was a teenager. I survived a serious illness, which left me comatose for some time, and while recovering, I imagined all the things I would have never had a chance to share with her if I hadn’t lived. That’s where the idea of a daughter finding her mother’s journals after losing her unexpectedly originated.

Throughout the story, Elle always has a plan for how to fix things. As I was re-reading Beauty in the Bittersweet, I realized how naturally it came to me to write her character this way. Even when she confronts the woman who is trying to destroy her marriage, her thought is…as long as such and such happens or doesn’t happen, this is how things will work out. I also tend to throw myself into productivity when things aren’t going well in certain areas of my life. Stressed? I clean. Career stalling? I find side projects (such as this book!). Relationship issues? Work more hours. Faith being challenged? Do more, go further, try harder.

Even after leading the character of Elle toward finally giving up the need to control everything, I still find myself fighting that tendency in my own life. When things aren’t working out, I’m certain it’s because I did something wrong. So, although I recognize it in myself, I still haven’t fully released the urge to power through. Rest is a four-letter word, but it’s a four-letter word to me.

That being said, God taught me so much through the experience of bringing this novel to publication. He graciously allowed me to find an agent on my first pitch, but it took many rewrites, and many submissions before we reached this phase. I have been humbled and reminded that His timing won’t always make sense to me. I know I’m stubborn, and I have had that stubbornness held up to me like a mirror more times than I can count when I have to admit that someone else had a good point after all. I have been reminded, and am still reminded, that I can’t be writing this book for myself. I have to write it for whoever it is that it is meant to reach.

Reaching publication was partly just to prove to myself that I could do it, but several of the secondary characters made it clear they had their own stories to tell, so I’m looking forward to releasing at least three more books in the A Thornbush and Juniper Story series. Each story focuses on a woman from Beauty in the Bittersweet, and how her faith is tested, renewed, or forged through real world experiences. My stories may be grittier than some, but I write with hope at the center. I hesitate to classify this series as “romance,” although there may be a central couple, but each book is meant to show an abundance of grace in the messiest of circumstances.

I used to say I write fiction because I don’t want my personal life to be on display. That was before I realized that I have to be somewhat open when it comes to building my platform! But I’ve realized it isn’t bad to be open about my life because so much of it inspires my stories. I wrote about infidelity in this book because I have been on both sides of it. I’ve been cheated on and I’ve been the other woman. It’s why book three in this series lets the “villain” in Beauty in the Bittersweet tell her side of things–not as an excuse, but to show her journey. My characters may be rich with flaws, but their redemption–in a way–tells the story of my own. And my past is horrible. My present is hard. But I can write happy endings because my future is hopeful.

Guest Post by Sherry Shindelar

In preparation for this book and the one to follow, my husband and I decided to go on a Wild West adventure. We traveled to Oklahoma and Texas for spring break 2024. The first stop was the National Cowboy Museum. The museum is home to rooms of beautiful Western art, a collection of John Wayne’s guns from all of his movies, exhibits on cowboys, the frontier West, and Native American art. The most practical part for me was a life-size Western town. I saw a fully-stocked general store, a bank, a livery stable, a hotel, a doctor’s office, a saloon, and much more.

In Texas, I visited the Plains-Panhandle Historical Museum, where I learned about Comanche culture, ranching, and the frontier. I also had the pleasure of walking through another model of a Western frontier town. (These buildings were a great help when it came to describing places that my characters visit in Texas Divided.)

We eventually made our way to San Angelo, Texas, where we toured Fort Concho, a stone fort built in 1867 (contrary to popular opinion, most frontier forts of the era didn’t have walls around them).

We drove by the area where Camp Cooper once stood, the setting for much of Texas Forsaken, and by Fort Belknap, another fort that plays a role in Texas Forsaken and Texas Divided.

From there, we traveled to Lawton, Oklahoma and toured the Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center where I received advice from a native-language speaker regarding the Comanche words in my novels. Finally, I visited Fort Sill and the grave sites of Cynthia Ann Parker (the inspiration for my character, Eyes-Like-Sky, in Texas Forsaken), her daughter Prairie Flower, and her son, Quanah Parker, one of the greatest Comanche chiefs ever.

However, the most adventuresome part of the trip was our time spent at the Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle. It’s the second-largest canyon in the U.S. and is lined with colorful mesas, said to resemble Spanish skirts. It was a favorite haunt of the Comanche. My husband and I stayed in stone cabins built in the 1930’s by the CCC at the bottom of the canyon. The stars at night were phenomenal.

During the daytime, we went hiking. The first day was a long trail, so we asked the clerk in the park office to recommend an easier hike for the second day. Wow! Was she mistaken! The “short” trail that she directed us to take was steep, filled with rocks, and washed-out patches that sloped toward the edge of the canyon. I was ready to give up in the first five minutes, but my husband encouraged me to go on to the top of the mesa. (I should also mention that I’m afraid of heights.)

Several times during the hike, I wanted to turn around and go back, but as I looked at what lay behind me, it looked almost scarier than what lay ahead. I trudged along wondering how I would be able to deal with my fear on the return trip.

But my husband helped me navigate through the challenge. He told me to keep my eyes on my feet, stay close to the side of the mesa not the edge, and follow him.

And that’s what I did. I didn’t look at the steep pathway with its serious descents and occasional gaps with no stable ground for a solid step, and I didn’t dare glance any where near the edge. My feet, one step at a time, were my focus, following behind my husband, walking where he walked, and holding onto him in the gaps.

My tension eased. I could do this!

You’d better believe I breathed a sigh of relief when we reached flat ground. But I was thankful I hadn’t given up and that my husband had encouraged me to go on. The journey had been worth it once I’d put my fear behind me.

And I realized God had a message for me in this hike. My vacation half spent, I’d already begun to feel the weight of the workload and writing tasks (I was behind schedule in writing Texas Divided, and I was preparing to launch Texas Forsaken) that awaited me upon my return home. I’d been wondering how I was going to navigate all of the responsibilities of the next few weeks, the busiest time of my year, this year busier than ever before.

Suddenly, I knew. I could do it one step at a time, focusing on the next task, instead of worrying about a dozen others that lay ahead, trusting the Lord to see me through the maze and realizing I don’t have to carry the burden alone.

Our seven days in Texas and Oklahoma were awesome. I’m still benefiting from the rich research I gathered, but as I look back on this trip, I realize that a year later, the lessons from the hike of taking it one step at time and trusting the Lord to see me through are still as pertinent and needed today as they were last March, except this year, I’m launching Texas Divided and writing Texas Reclaimed.

About These Long Shadows

Title: These Long Shadows Series: On Victory's Wings #3 Author: Jennifer Mistmorgan Publisher: Independently Published Release Date: March 21, 2025 Genre: Historical Romance WWII

How do they rebuild a marriage that wasn’t real in the first place? If you love epic wartime romance with a dash of intrigue, you’ll love this second-chance, marriage-of-convenience love story.

London, 1945: Two years ago, Jonty Ables married Katie Baines to save her and her unborn baby from shame. But now the war is all but over, the baby is gone and they must work out where their shaky marriage fits into lives irrevocably changed by war.

Clinging to the memory of a time before all happiness evaporated, Katie works hard during the day as a seamstress. At night she comes home to a tiny terrace on a bomb-scarred street, crammed with her extended family and their problems. Years of estrangement sit between her and her recently demobilised husband. She’s not even sure she loves him. So why is she so crushed that he calls out another woman’s name in his sleep?

Jonty is determined to honor the vows he made no matter how many ghosts plague him. But with such separate lives, his wife is more of a stranger than ever. When Katie’s friend goes missing, Jonty seizes the opportunity to help her find him just so they have reason to talk. But the war casts long shadows over their efforts, and fighting for their future might just be the hardest battle of them all.

Book 3 of the On Victory’s Wings series, These Long Shadows, is easily read as a standalone novel.

Guest Post by Jennifer Mistmorgan

Thanks for having me as a guest at your writing spot!

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I’m an Australian indie author. I live in Canberra, which is the capital of Australia. Most Australians would call it boring, but I think that’s unfair. It is surrounded by nature, including amazing birdlife. I’m lucky enough to have a big window near my writing desk that is often home to several Crimson Rosellas.

Why do you write so much about WWII?

I’m endlessly fascinated by 20th Century history, especially WWII. I don’t think I could ever run out of interesting stories from this period! It was such a tumultuous time for the entire world. Because I write romance, I look for romantic possibilities wherever I can and a wartime setting raises the stakes for any love story.

What research was required for your book?

My latest book These Long Shadows is set in England between the surrenders of Germany and Japan, so I had to do a lot of reading about life at the end of the war. The disruption of war had a long, long tail to it. The process of relocating and standing down troops in Europe alone took years, and many British men who had been prisoners in the Far East (the Pacific) didn’t get back to England until 1947.

Then, to have all these men return home when there was a housing shortage (due to wartime bombing) and heavy food rationing caused enormous social upheaval. I loved that historical research, but actually it is all the backdrop to a very domestic, very personal story of two characters who must face the consequences of their wartime decisions and work out how to love each other.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

These Long Shadows is the final in a series of three called On Victory’s Wings. They are all standalone stories, but feature overlapping characters. So I met my protagonists, Katie and Jonty, while writing Heart in the Clouds. Honestly, Katie was just a plot device. It’s not nice to say this but she was sort of like a disposable character in that bigger story. But once I tied up the plot involving her with a marriage to Jonty, I just knew there was more to their story. I also knew in my bones I wanted to write about the pain and grief of a child passing away (which is something that has happened to me). So the story went from there.

What was your favourite scene to write?

During the war, airmen were issued with silk maps of Europe, designed to help them plot an escape route if they were shot down. These maps were sold off cheaply after the war. Because they were silk, women snapped them up to make underwear out of them! My favourite scene to write was the one where Jonty sees Katie in the slip she’s made out of these maps. It was one of the earliest scenes I conceived and I thought I might have to cut it at one point. But I am so glad it stayed in!

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

When I got to the end of writing the series, I realised that grief was a recurring theme in all the On Victory’s Wings books. This wasn’t intentional, but it was definitely God’s hand at work. It turned out that the victory I was writing about had nothing to do with WWII. So ultimately, I want people to know that Jesus makes it possible for us to grieve with hope in the face of catastrophic tragedy.

Also, I want readers to swoon over a hero who is truly good. Jonty isn’t handsome or wealthy, but he loves his wife with unrelenting kindness and patience.

You can’t watch your own back.

Private Investigator Avery Reynolds leads the charge to expose Tampa’s supposedly “extinct” mob. The crime boss responsible for her foster brother’s death is within her grasp—until she hits a wall in the form of Ethan Bridger, a Coast Guard veteran who unknowingly derails her sting operation. When the elusive “Big Eddie” comes out of hiding, he targets their mutual friends about to tie the knot.

Avery sets aside her angst toward Ethan to focus on ending the crime boss’s reign of terror. But working together exposes her trust issues and his PTSD stemming from a comrade’s tragedy. When Avery goes solo into a prisoner exchange operation, she discovers her vulnerability too late—and must lean on Ethan and the God she thought had abandoned her. But will that help reach her in time?

Who’s Got Your Six?

As the only girl among my siblings, I grew up a tomboy. My two brothers and I played with cars, not dolls, and I remember having to ask a friend how to play “house” because I really had no clue. I was, however, familiar with GI-Joe, John Wayne, and Tarzan. Phrases like “I’ve got your six” made sense to me.

In Watch Your Back, Avery Reynolds is a private investigator who would certainly know that phrase means to have someone else’s back. She would also make sure to protect her colleagues and clients; but in her heart, she doesn’t trust anyone to truly watch out for her. Abandoned by her parents at seven and having lived in and out of foster care, she’s fiercely independent because she’s had to be. Now, she keeps even the people in her circle at arm’s length.

Turns out, she does have someone watching her back, the very villain she’s on a quest to bring to justice for the murder of her foster brother. Modern-day mob boss “Big Eddie” doesn’t take kindly that his Hollywood star Valentina Russo received a life sentence thanks to Avery’s work. Now, he’s out to “pay his debts” to her and her friends responsible for Russo’s sentencing. The question is, will Avery learn she needs others—and the God she thought had abandoned her—before her independent streak costs her everything?

The truth Avery needs to learn is that we can’t watch our own backs because we were never meant to. The Bible says, “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NKJV).

As the mom to a young toddler, I’m no stranger to the stubborn nature within each of us that cries, “Me do it!” From a young age, we want to solve our own problems, be independent, and exert our autonomy. If you don’t believe me, come join my family for dinner and watch my toddler protest about eating his favorite meal—for absolutely no reason other than that he wants to be the ruler of himself.

But we were never meant be our own independent islands. Similar to how I know what is best for my toddler, God knows what is best for us. The Bible tells us, “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

I certainly don’t deny the very real hurt that comes from being abandoned or disappointed by others. Watching her parents walk out of her life scarred Avery in a very real way. But equally real is the never-ending love of God. He’s been waiting for—and reaching out to—her again and again, despite her rebuffs toward Him. God doesn’t quit on her even though she’s quit on Him.

Have you been hurt by others? Have you believed the lie you can’t trust anyone to “watch your six”? Scripture says, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry” (Psalm 34:15). If you’re God’s child, He sees you, hears you, and loves you. And He’s always got your back.
