Author Interview with Jerusha Agen

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Since I write about working K-9s in the Guardians Unleashed Series, you might wonder if I have dogs myself. I do! I have two of the biggest, furriest dogs you’ve probably ever seen!

One is a Great Pyrenees, Marshmallow, who loves to guard and protect like he was bred to do (which means barking 24/7). But he’s also one of the friendliest dogs you’ll ever meet. Unless you have evil intentions, that is. Yes, he knows how to tell!

My younger dog is Galen, a giant Leonberger. At three years old, he’s just a puppy in many ways still. But he’s maturing into a sweet, gentle giant who loves meeting children and getting his picture taken every time he goes anywhere! I think he’s probably on social media far more than I am, thanks to his “fans” sharing his photos.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

A day in the life of heroine Phoenix Gray is busy! She rises early each day and keeps to a strict, packed schedule. Many days, her schedule includes teaching self-defense to women at a domestic abuse shelter, leading self-defense classes for at-risk girls and boys, and overseeing a program at the local prison where inmates train rescued dogs to become service K-9s.

She also operates the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency, supervising the agents’ jobs and contracts and getting personally involved whenever a job becomes particularly dangerous or complicated.

But her many regular tasks are put on hold when the FBI calls her to consult on kidnapping recoveries and investigations.

No matter what she’s doing, she is always accompanied by Dagian, her loyal K-9 companion who is also a tracking, search and rescue, and cadaver dog.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

The idea for Phoenix’s story was spawned years ago, when a real-life crime of horrific proportions was committed. At the time, I was deeply impacted by the darkness of the crime and struggled with wondering why God would allow such a thing to happen. I prayed earnestly for the victim for a long time.

Terminal Danger, the story of a person who overcomes a similar, dreadful tragedy, was born out of my own grappling with how a person could survive such horrors and how God is at work, using the worst of evil for His good purpose.

What did you learn while writing this story?

I learned something I need to keep re-learning again and again! Terminal Danger turned out to be the most difficult novel to write in my career thus far. That was due in part to the extreme complexities and intelligence of Phoenix Gray. She was incredibly challenging to write and required a story of equal complexity and depth to do her justice.

But because of the struggles I had with bringing this novel to the page, I feared the story I had eagerly anticipated writing for years was going to fall short of what I had hoped and disappoint the readers who had been looking forward to Phoenix’s book.

I had to keep praying and trusting God to bring about His purpose in this story and to bring all the elements together to produce a powerful story that points to Him. And He did just that! Early readers have been moved and impacted by this story that God wrought, turning my mess into a message!

I learned, once again, that I need to trust God to guide and use my writing for His glory, even when I can’t see what He’s doing.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

I hope and pray that readers will be deeply struck with the encouraging truth that God can and will use even the darkest of circumstances and most vile forms of evil to bring about His redemptive purpose.

Nothing can stop His goodness and His light. He has conquered evil, and in Christ, His children share in His victory over this world. No matter what we’re going through, let us cling to this certain hope!

Christmas should be a time of wonder and celebration, but the obstacles each faces seem insurmountable. Even, at times, life-threatening. Perhaps they will find what they are seeking during this season of miracles and hope. Or maybe, with God’s help, they will discover that the longing of their hearts takes them to places—and people—they didn’t even know they’d been searching for.

Author Interview: A Café Chat With the Fab Four

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a book? How authors come up with their stories? Well, the Fab Four would love to share all about their Christmas anthology, I’ll Be Home, with you. Grab your favorite beverage, a cozy plaid blanket, gather around the fire, and let’s chat!

We’re curious, how did you all meet, and where did the name Fab Four come from?

Funny enough, we all live within southwestern Ontario, but Helena and Darlene actually met at a writer’s conference in Colorado! Small world. Most of us connected through The Word Guild, a Canadian writing organization. We started going on writers retreats and conferences. We formed a beautiful friendship and have become close friends. As for the name, I believe Helena (or as we call her, Helen), came up with it on Facebook Messenger as a joke, but it stuck. We’re so thankful God put us together. We fit perfectly.

How did you come up with the idea to put out a Christmas anthology?

On our way back from the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference, we started talking about how fun it would be to put an anthology out together. That one spark was all it took and we soon began brainstorming ideas. Helena wanted to write historical. Sara thought it would be fun to write a romance about Anne of Green Gables. Melanie wanted to write a rom-com. And then there’s Darlene (insert laugh here). She writes about serial killers, but that just didn’t seem to fit with the other three stories, so she decided to tame things down with a cozy mystery story with a Hallmarky (is that a word?) vibe. We then thought it would be fun to write stories with the theme of “coming home” and decided to include a train in each one. There are also what we call “Easter eggs” in every story. We hope readers will have fun trying to find them.

Sara, what was the inspiration behind Just a Gilbert Blythe Kind of Girl?

Ever since I first saw the Anne of Green Gables mini-series in the eighties, my bookish heart has belonged to the guy who had lost his own heart to Anne the day she broke a slate over his head. As my heroine, Lucy, says, when her dad asks her what is with women and Gilbert Blythe, “He’s incredibly cute and sweet and adorable and he really gets Anne and he’s always there for her.” There is just something so innocent and heartwarming about Anne and Gilbert’s story—about them finding their way to each other and Anne the orphan discovering family and home. When the four of us began talking about doing an anthology together and setting each story in a different province, I knew immediately my story had to have a Green Gables theme and be set in PEI. Filled with nostalgia and a hint of romance, this story of coming home brings me so much comfort and joy, and I pray it will do the same for readers. After all, isn’t nostalgia, home, comfort, and joy what we all long to experience at Christmas?

Melanie, tell us what a typical day looks like for Porsha in Where My Heart Belongs?

Despite crushing on her boss, forgetting coffee dates with friends (she’s left Barbie waiting more times than she can count), and spending copious amounts of time searching for her keys, Porsha spends her days as provincial marketing manager at Imagine. Most days, after racing to grab her morning coffee at the corner cafe, she jumps from client to team meetings, spearheading various ad campaigns that build brand recognition and increase sales for her clients. She says, “If I’m working on a project, you’ll think I fell off the face of the earth.” After work, for stress relief, she goes for long runs along Lakeshore Boulevard or uses the treadmill in her apartment during the winter.

Helena, what research was required for Love Across Time?

I love history. The WWII era intrigues me as I try to wrap my mind around how, even in the face of such devastation, people clung to the rhythms of ordinary life. Despite the horrors surrounding them, they still celebrated holidays, fell in love, and got married. These seemingly small acts of silent resistance stand as a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and our determination to fight against evil in whatever way we can. Looking at period photographs, checking flight logs at the British Archives, and exploring London’s museums, I’m reminded of the resilience of those who came before us. Their ability to find joy and meaning, even in the darkest times, is both humbling and inspiring, showing us that light can always be found amidst the shadows.

Darlene, what encouragement do you hope readers will take away from Mistletoe and Mayhem in the Rockies?

Emory and Hunter both wrestled with different fears, but ultimately learned to give everything over to God. He does know best, doesn’t He? This is something we all can relate to, can’t we? I’m so thankful He’s the one in control and we can come home to Him always. They also realized that ultimately, God has the best plan for their lives. The verse I chose for this story is Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Fab Four, last question. What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Darlene – Most of my readers know that I’ve been dubbed “The Plaid Queen” because of my love of everything plaid. I have over 30 plaid shirts, two dresses, four coats, and a few purses. What they may not know is the story behind the plaid. My brother, Murray, loved blue plaid. He passed away a few years ago from bone marrow cancer. One day my sister and I were shopping, and we bought matching plaid shirts in Murray’s memory. After that, I started “Plaid Fridays” at work in memory of him and added more shirts (and more!) to my closet.

Helena – What readers might not know about me is that my journey as a writer started in high school when I was freelancing for the Mississauga News. I never imagined that those early days of journalism would shape the storyteller I am today. Beyond my love for suspense and romance, I’m fascinated by the people behind the stories, having interviewed figures like Ann Graham Lotz and Cec Murphey. Whether it’s diving into historical research or crafting contemporary tales, I’ve learned that every story has the potential to change someone’s perspective—and that’s what keeps me writing.

Melanie – As well as being a writer, I am also a painter. Initially, I entered the University of Waterloo for English but graduated with a Fine Arts degree. In university, I gravitated towards the works of the Impressionists and Cubists. Since then, I have painted large abstracts in oil and acrylic. I love being surrounded by beauty and see creating as a way to both mimic our Creator and bring heaven to earth. I do so not only with words and paint but also with gardening. I tell my friends that when you get to heaven follow the scent of roses, and that’s where I’ll be.

Sara – One of the things that has made my life interesting is moving. I’ve moved a lot. Like, a lot. By the time I was in third grade (or, as we say in Canada, grade three), I was attending my fourth school. Before getting married, I had moved nine or ten times. My husband and I have been married almost twenty-nine years, and we have moved ten times for various reasons, mostly work-related. I don’t mind it. In fact, because I grew up that way, after I’ve lived somewhere for a year or two, I get itchy feet and start thinking about where we might go next. I have friends and good memories from every place I’ve lived, and no matter where I go, I feel at home as soon as I find the library, a church, and a good coffee shop. Besides, meeting all those new people and discovering new places always gives me lots of fodder for my stories!

The Fab Four appreciates you chatting with us in our café.

Here’s a fun picture of us on pajama day enjoying the fire at Mel’s cottage. Can you guess who’s who? ?

You mentioned you go on writers retreats. What do you do at these retreats?

Drink coffee. Lots of coffee. It’s a prerequisite for the Fab Four! As well as chocolate. ? LOL. We brainstorm, write, share what we’ve written for critiques, eat, watch a movie, eat more, giggle, catch up on our lives. We have so much fun together. However, the best part of our retreats? Our powerful prayer sessions. Wow. God is in the house (or cottage)! Seriously, we are simply four gals who love to write, love each other, love God, and want to be His light.

Thanks for sharing with us. It’s been fun.

Happy reading, friends. We hope you enjoy these four unique stories from I’ll Be Home as much as we loved writing them!

Author Interview with Caroline Johnston

Author Interview with Caroline Johnston

Read an author interview with Caroline Johnston about her contemporary fiction novella The Mother’s Song, part of the Our House on Sycamore Street multi-author, multi-genre collection.

About the Book

Miranda McVitty, wife, mother and campsite owner. Miranda loves to sing as she goes about her work and this summer she’s learning to sing her prayers as well as her to do list… which seems never ending when the chaos of life begins to assault her from all angles… Her husband faces potential redundancy, her oldest daughter is struggling with self-doubts, her mother is recovering from an operation and her business needs new direction? Will her songs be enough to carry her through?

Naomi, Miranda’s oldest daughter, is distraught after failing one of her exams in Building Surveying. She’s never failed an exam in her life. Now more than ever she needs peace and quiet to study for her resit, but in a house and campsite where there’s always something happening (and a madcap mother who’s taken to singing all the time), that’s unlikely. To top it off, her mum has hired recent graduate, Lewis Carter, for the summer. And her mum isn’t exactly subtle in her manoeuvres to get these two together, much to Naomi’s annoyance.

Join the McVitty family in the chaos of family life and running the Eden Cove campsite in this contemporary story of balancing work, life and family, all covered by a Mother’s Song.

Author Interview

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I live in Scotland with my husband and three (almost adult) children. I love being outside, no matter what the Scottish weather is doing. Also, I love tea! I drink between six and ten mugs of tea per day.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

The Mother’s Song features the McVitty family, who stay at 11 Sycamore Street. Miranda McVitty is a busy woman. She has three children, she runs the Eden Cove campsite, and she loves singing and getting involved in all kinds of activities in the Eden Cove community, including beach cleanups, the community choir and the wild swimming club. She starts her day with a song—putting her to-do list to music to make sure she remembers everything. She’s also learning to put her prayers to music, and singing for her family and friends. She’s trying not to meddle in her daughter, Naomi’s, love life—but she’s not very good at staying out of it.

I would love to have Miranda’s energy!

What was the inspiration behind your story?

Anna Jensen came up with the idea of having a multi-author, multi-genre series set in a village on the English coast, and she asked if I would like to take part. Part of Anna’s inspiration for the series was the song Our House by Madness (a much loved song from my youth!). As I thought about my story, I listened to Our House several times and read over the lyrics. The words inspired me to write about the McVitty family. A busy, always-on-the-go family living in a bustling house. And as the story was inspired by a song, then the book needed more music—more hits from the 80s and worship songs.

What did you learn while writing this story?

We’re all busy people, trying to juggle work, life and rest. The rhythm of life looks different for each one of us—but whatever it looks like, it’s important for us to find that rhythm in Jesus.

Caroline Johnston lives in Paisley, Scotland with her husband and three children. While writing, she drinks lots of tea and eats lots of biscuits. When not writing, she loves to be outdoors.

The Lost Daughter’s Irishman Author Interview

The Lost Daughter’s Irishman Author Interview

Learn more about The Lost Daughter’s Irishman in this author interview with Carolyn Miller.

About the Book

She wants to find a way to live again; he wants to close a deal and move on. Until sparks fly and these opposites attract in this contemporary romance filled with heart and humour.

For Kara Browne, hiding out in Eden Cove provides a chance to heal after her life fell apart. Now, without a family or career, she juggles jobs while trying to find her feet again, thankful for this tiny community that has taken her to their heart. When a handsome Irishman appears in Eden Cove with his plans to take over the local luxury hotel where she works, his obvious wealth combined with a series of unfortunate events convince her that they’re worlds apart. Which they soon will be, seeing she’s already booked her ticket to the other side of the planet.

For Colin Fairall, his time in Eden Cove was supposed to be about closing a deal on a hotel to add to his family’s portfolio. He didn’t expect to become intrigued by a snarky barista who moonlights as a hotel cleaner and a barmaid, who obviously doesn’t care about his money or connections. He recognizes that she’s been bruised by life and wants to help her smile again. But despite shared faith and a fondness for 80s music trivia, Kara has plans for a fresh start on the other side of the world – unless he can convince her to trust him with her heart…

The Lost Daughter’s Irishman contains heart-wrenching poignancy and laugh-out-loud moments in this opposites attract Christian contemporary short novel from bestselling author Carolyn Miller.

Author Interview

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I enjoy doing ballet. I used to dance ballet, tap and jazz when I was a lot younger, but last year picked it up again. In fact, some of my ballet teacher’s experiences formed some of the scenes in my recent novel Pointe, Shoots and Scores, about a former pro ballerina, a reluctant hockey hero and a Dancing with the Stars scenario.

Oh, and I love travel. Recently my husband and I were blessed with the opportunity to travel to Thailand, and one of my highlights was swimming with a baby elephant!

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

For Kara Browne, she’s a busy bee juggling three jobs: a barista at the Moo and Two, cleaning at the fancy hotel Greton Hall, and working as a barmaid at the local pub The Lion and the Lamb. She barely has time to breathe! When she does find down-time, she enjoys beach runs and watching TV and plotting her escape to the opposite side of the world. Keeping busy and escaping into TV and books is the way she likes it, so she doesn’t have time to think about all she’s lost.

Colin Fairall is also kept busy with his travels for his family’s company, which means a lot of negotiations, pen-pushing and boring report writing. When he gets a chance he likes to blow off steam with a beach run—which might be where he spots a certain barista-cleaner-barmaid who also shares a penchant for such things. At the end of the day he enjoys winding down with a nice meal and a Guinness, and catching up with his family—who share a quirky love for 80s pop music.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

Imagine what it would be like to lose all your family, to feel lost and adrift in the world. Then imagine someone who appears to be your total opposite coming into your life, and making you further question your self-worth. I wanted to create a story with poignancy, a heartbroken heroine and a hero who helps her find her feet—and faith—again. And it’s always nice to have a hero who discovers he’s not the ant’s pants and has to work a little harder to win his lady’s heart! For this story as well, I was thrilled to include some scenes set at my ‘family castle’ in Ireland, a place I visited with my sister back in 2015, that will be the setting for a new series set in Ireland I plan to release down the track.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

That whatever circumstances we face, God is right there in the midst of it with us, offering us strength, grace, wisdom and rest in Him. I hope people read The Lost Daughter’s Irishman and know that God loves us, He is faithful, and we can trust Him with all aspects of our lives.

Carolyn Miller lives in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, with her husband and four children. A longtime lover of romance, especially that of Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer and LM Montgomery, Carolyn loves drawing readers into fictional worlds that show the truth of God’s grace in our lives. Her contemporary romance series includes the Original Six hockey romance series, Muskoka Romance series, and the Independence Islands series, and her historical series include the Regency Brides and Regency Wallflowers series.

Read an Excerpt from The Lost Daughter's Irishman

Kara wended her way through the red-checked tableclothed tables to outside, hands on her hips as she surveyed the street. Really, it wasn’t any wonder that people loved Eden Cove. The village with its quaint shops, situated between the clifftop castle ruins and the North Sea lighthouse, could be on a chocolate box somewhere. It was almost too pretty.

She sighed. As pretty as it was, she didn’t think she’d miss it come December, and her chance to finally escape to the other side of the—

“Look out!”

A man on a high-tech road bike swerved and nearly knocked her down. She staggered back to safety in the doorway, her heart hammering. But apart from his yelled warning, Mister Lycra Pants seemed oblivious to his near-accident as he rode on. Protest rose within her. She swallowed it. Turned away. She had no interest in watching the non-skills of a Middle-Aged Man in Lycra negotiating hazards while pretending he was twenty years younger than he was.

“Are you okay?” Denise asked.

“Just a near-miss with a MAMIL without a clue.”

Denise wrinkled her nose. “I thought they saved that for weekends.”

“Apparently not.”

“Personally, I don’t understand why a man’s mid-life crisis can’t involve a flashy sports car rather than a flashy road bike. They might look a tad like a gigolo cruising Lake Como but at least that way there’s less beer belly on show.”

Kara chuckled, accepted the cream bun Denise offered, and bit into it as she moved back to her place. Denise was good value.

A scan of her phone alerted her to several new notifications, including one from an overseas car hire company. One of her big challenges was figuring out how to get from point A to point B in a country thirty times larger in size than the UK. Kara sure couldn’t use a bike for travelling around Australia when she got there, even though she used one every day here. She’d rarely driven a car since the accident, even though her father’s—decidedly non-flashy non-sports—car was available to use. She couldn’t. It still smelled too much like him.

She blinked hard against the burn in her eyes that thoughts of them always produced and exhaled slowly, licking her fingers as she scoffed the last of the bun.

A shadow drew across her, and she looked up. Blinked. Mr Lycra Pants had returned, but he definitely wasn’t middle-aged. Or if he was, he was doing even better than Theo James in his prime The Gentlemen days. Dark hair, cropped short but not so short she couldn’t detect a curl, and dark blue eyes offset by a healthy tan. The lycra bike top was now unzipped, revealing a V-shaped peek at his chest and abs. A beer belly was not his problem.

Her gaze trailed back to his face, where he’d arched a masculine thick-but-not-unkempt brow, his gaze studying her intently, like he was Adam and she was Eve. Her heart thudded with anticipation.

Author Interview

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Many of the things I enjoy doing, I started later in my adult life. I started scuba diving in my forties, started pottery classes in my mid-fifties, and wrote and published my first book in my late fifties. I firmly believe that you are never too old to try something new, and we are generally limited only by our frame of mind.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

My main character, Johlene Anderson, was a paramedic in South Africa, so most days were spent responding to medical emergencies, where she was responsible for assessing, treating, and stabilising patients before transporting them to hospital. In her current situation in Eden Cove, she is leading a much quieter life, spending much of her day exploring the area and….oh but that next thing would be giving away a crucial part of the story, so we’ll just leave it there for now!

Morgan Saunders leads a very full life as the local carpenter, handyman, shuttle bus driver, and part-time lighthouse keeper.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

My eldest daughter Shannon is a paramedic (in South Africa) and I have seen how taxing the job can be. She has been held captive in a locked rooms for many hours, held at gunpoint and knife point, and been physically attacked. I wanted to relate how such job stressors can chisel away at one’s faith, and in Johlene’s case one single event could completely destroy her faith. I also wanted to show that redemption is available to anyone, no matter what they have gone through.

What did you learn while writing this story?

I have a habit of going down rabbit holes when I’m doing research for stories, and this has not been an exception. I did extensive research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and was shocked to discover how many people this affects. I also studied information on the various types of treatment available to assist with PTSD, one of which is Christian trauma counselling. This form of counselling offers a holistic approach to healing by integrating faith and spirituality. It addresses both psychological and spiritual aspects of trauma recovery.

This aligns very nicely with my own beliefs about healing, which may involve someone needing medication, but that they would most definitely benefit from Christian counselling, which helps the recipient/patient to overcome their issues.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

I would like for those people who suffer from PTSD to take some hope from the story. There are many people out there who are prepared to walk with you on your road to recovery. Reach out to trusted members of your church (or a church in your community if you aren’t already in a church family), trust that God is always by your side, no matter the circumstances. Interestingly, when I pulled out an old notebook that I wanted to use to jot down some pertinent facts for the story, on the first page I had written “…but with God all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26. If that isn’t divine intervention, then I don’t know what is!

For those people who are fortunate to have not suffered PTSD, be sensitive to the emotional state of those around you and help to provide them with the support they might need.

Convincing Lou Author Interview

Convincing Lou Author Interview

Join us for an author interview with Jodie Wolfe about her novel Convincing Lou, book four in the Burrton Springs Brides series.

About the Book

How hard can it be to round up one delinquent groom?

Ellie Lou Williams will do just about anything to save her ranch, even going undercover as a man to round up a fella who is late to his own wedding. The reward will more than cover the money she owes the bank and solve all her problems.

Caleb Martin agrees to one final job as a deputy U.S. Marshal before he starts his new life away from the trail and tracking criminals. What he isn’t counting on is a mysterious bounty hunter who’s determined to undermine his every step.

Will one reach their goal first? Or will they learn to lean on God and work together?

Author Interview

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I love winter and snow which made this story fun to write as I included a blizzard or two for my hero and heroine to deal with.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

Most of the story takes place along the trail as Ellie Lou and Caleb work to find an outlaw. They have to deal with the elements together as well as trying to figure out how to get along with each other.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

Convincing Lou is book four in my Burrton Springs Brides Series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. Ellie Lou was first introduced along with her husband in book one, Taming Julia. In book two, Protecting Annie, she was mentioned again. Her husband became sick in this book. In book three, Wooing Gertrude, Ellie Lou becomes a close friend to Gertrude after her husband died. In book four, I wanted Ellie Lou to have her own happily-ever-after story.

What did you learn while writing this story?

This was probably one of the most difficult stories to write because, like Ellie Lou, my husband and I have been going through fires and storms the past couple years. We’ve been on our own journey of trusting God in the midst of trials.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

My encouragement is that no matter what you’re facing, God promises to be with you. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV) says,

‘When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

Notice it says WHEN not if. He’s faithful in sticking by our sides through whatever comes our way.
