About Kayleigh's Knight

A sweet small-town romance with a sprinkle of humor and Irish luck!

Kayleigh O’Reilly has worked hard to have the perfect life. Graduating at the top of her class, her dream of becoming a writer is within reach when she’s awarded a spot in the renowned Creative Writing Program at Emerald Isle University. Just as all of her dreams are coming true, her world is turned upside down when her boyfriend breaks up with her the day she leaves for Ireland.

In the land of Saints and Scholars, Kayleigh begins her freshman year broken-hearted and in need of inspiration. Hope comes in the form of Seamus Murphy, the local fisherman and ruggedly handsome poet, and his offer to rent a small uninhibited cottage by the sea so she can focus on her writing. Feeling free for the first time, Kayleigh begins a journey with renewed faith and hope in the dreams blooming deep in her heart.

Inspired by the enchanting small town of Cloverdale, Kayleigh accepts a position at the local newspaper. The future is bright until she uncovers a deadly plot to revenge a decades old feud. Danger looms over the town and Kayleigh must decide who she can trust and if true love is worth the risk. As the storm threatens to destroy, will Kayleigh finally be able to find the words to write her own story?

Author Interview

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Today I write under the title of One Spirit of Love. I founded my animal-assisted learning and wellness program, Spirit of Love, in 2018, and it was founded on faith, love, and small-town community—the same foundation of my writing. As I reflected on my writing, it occurred to me that every aspect of my life has one thing in common, one reality that is at the center of it all—the One Spirit. Jesus put the dream of writing in my heart, and it grows every day with His love.

What makes up your ideal reading environment?

Oh, this is fun. Let’s imagine…a cozy chair, a comfy blanket and a cup of hot tea. The warmth of a fire crackling in the fireplace and my dogs laying by my side. That would be lovely.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

I’m not sure that I can pick just one. I truly loved writing Kayleigh’s Knight. One scene that stands out is really more of a compilation of scenes with Kayleigh, Seamus, and Colonel, the grungy Irish wolfhound that Kayleigh finds and adopts. I enjoy the humor between these three and the gentleness that comes through Seamus’ tough guy exterior. The three of them play off of each other in a way that makes each of them endearing in their own ways.

What unique research was required to write this story?

There’s a part of the story that includes a decades long Irish grudge that originates in a small town in County Donegal. Kayleigh travels to the town of Elderstone where the infamous shop O’Doherty and Brannan’s Pot o’ Gold is located. The road and walkways are ancient cobblestone, giving a feel of antiquity. The walkways lead to homes and family-owned shops made of a combination of Scots pine and local stone. In Elderstone, a large granite stone is considered the metaphorical rock of the community. The section required a good amount of research into local rock types and the properties of the various kinds of stones.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

The Emerald Isle University Series is a New Adult book series weaving the stories of three sisters and their adventures of self-discovery and love in Ireland. The idea for The Emerald Isle University Series began after visiting Ireland for the first time. It is a land of dreams and treasures, and the Emerald Isle made a lasting impression on my heart. About three years ago, I picked up the pencil and began outlining this trilogy. The series combines Irish culture and the beauty of the land with friendship, family, mystery, and second chance love.

I always hoped for a sister, so the idea of writing a series based on the connection between three sisters was natural for me. Kayleigh is the second sister and reminds us that true love is always worth fighting for. Each sister has her own unique story, but the bond of love and friendship between the three is unbreakable.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

In Kayleigh’s Knight, Kayleigh finds the inspiration she needs to write from the heart. Kayleigh’s story shows the impact an encouraging teacher or friend can have. Always speak words of encouragement to others. You never know how much your words can change someone’s life.

A heritage neither of them desires, a wrong to right. A chance to end a family curse…

When strangers tumble through the doors of once resplendent Grandview Estate, Lady Laura Tamlow is pulled into a rather unexpected journey, away from the village she’s never left along with a gentleman unlike any she’s ever known.

Jonathan Canfield is out of options. And he’d do anything to restore his family fortunes in order to keep them from poverty, including roping Lady Tamlow into playing the part of thief. They must reclaim both his and her family jewels that were stolen the night of the fated Grand Masquerade of 1770, where both the Canfields and the Tamlows fell far from society’s good graces. If only his thief weren’t so lovely, he’d be able to focus on the mission without distraction.

But there’s a bigger problem at hand. The jewels reside at Lombard Park under the eye of Lord Herrington, a greedy dragon of a man who knows he’s about to die. Yet he has bigger claims than they ever imagined and attempts to steal something far more valuable than family jewels. With deception afoot, will Jonathan ever see Lady Tamlow again?

Author Interview with Ann Elizabeth Fryer

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I’m a huge fan of classics and vintage reads. I have a large collection of books by authors you’d expect: Austen, Dickens, Bronte, etc. as well as a collection from the time when publishing really began to boom in the 1880’s- onward. One of my latest acquisitions is a shabby cloth-bound book in the art nouveau style titled The Minister’s Wooing by; you’ll never guess! Harriet Beecher Stowe. A favorite podcast that feeds my insatiable desire for old books is The Gibson Girl Review, a podcast that reviews forgotten novels and is entirely entertaining! Check it out.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

A day in the life of Lady Laura Tamlow, my heroine, is slightly reclusive. She is a lady of a socially disgraced family who lives at an estate in a small village. She is titled but poor. The villagers still look up to her as a societal better, but she isn’t able to do much for them or aspire beyond the walls of Grandview Estate—yet! A day in her life includes helping the help: cleaning, laundry. She’s made friends of the local weaver’s children. And she pays visits to the poor of the community alongside the vicar’s wife. The girl was in desperate need of a handsome hero and an adventure, so I supplied her with one!

What was the inspiration behind your story?

The inspiration behind this story was The Hobbit! For real. I know that’s kind of obvious given that the story is a Regency Hobbit retelling, however, I will say that it was the elements of bravery that made me latch onto the idea of writing this story in the first place. I wanted to instill that into my main characters and place them in that fun framework.

Melting-Pot Thanksgiving by Andrea Renee Cox

Can she create the Imperfect Perfect Thanksgiving?

Sarah Jones has many responsibilities on her plate, but Thanksgiving wasn’t supposed to be one of them. When asked to host the holiday, she can’t push aside the task, even if it means dealing with her mother’s interference. As Sarah juggles meal preparations, a tight writing deadline, and guiding her two foster children through difficult life events, she must also find the courage to buck high expectations and family traditions.

Will the trials of strained communication, disappointment, heartache, and altered plans strengthen Sarah’s God-given novelist dreams? Will this imperfect yet dutiful daughter find a way to craft the perfect Thanksgiving dinner?

Author Interview with Andrea Renee Cox

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I’ve been a sports fan since I was a little kid. I fondly remember attending football and basketball games as a kindergartener. So sports tend to pop up in one way or another in a lot of my stories. In “Melting-Pot Thanksgiving,” my short story in Novelists in November, the leading lady’s brother followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a teacher and a coach. This aspect might play a tiny part in the tale, but it definitely made me smile as I wrote that connection to my lifelong love of sports.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

A day in the life of Sarah Jones, leading lady of “Melting-Pot Thanksgiving,” is a balance of mothering her foster children, writing middle grade novels, and dealing with family drama. Thankfully, her best friend lives in the other side of the duplex, so she’s got a listening ear just next door when she needs it.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

God inspires all my stories. I went through probably nine different ideas before landing on this one. Not even sure how I came around to the idea for this one, but as soon as it landed in my brain, I knew this was the one I was going to write for Novelists in November. When God gives me that “when you know, you know” feeling, that’s when I know I’ve found the next story He wants me to focus on. Working on that next right story with Him is one of my favorite things.

What did you learn while writing this story?

This might sound weird, but I learned how to let go of my previous story. “The Cottage on the Hill,” which was published in Springtime in Surrey, was the sweetest, most romantic story so far that God has given me to write, and I absolutely loved it. It sank so deep into my bones that I found it nearly impossible to switch gears to a new story once I was finished with that one.

In fact, I had to completely scrap draft one of “Melting-Pot Thanksgiving” because it came out flat with zero author voice or story tone. God helped me find the right tone from page one of draft two, and with every draft since (there were a total of twelve drafts on this story), “Melting-Pot” grew on me more and more so that now I love it equally to but in a vastly different way than “Cottage.” That journey to letting go of one story and claiming another was such a surprise blessing.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

Andrea: I never know what readers will get from my stories because every reading experience and lesson learned is unique to each individual reader. However, one of my favorite themes in “Melting-Pot Thanksgiving” is diversity. Sarah Jones desires for her home to be a safe place for her foster children of diverse backgrounds and cultures to be comfortable and grow in love toward one another. She encourages them to rise above stereotypes but to also cherish the heritage from which they came.

This is very much a reflection of my heart. I’ve long been fascinated by the wide variety of cultures in America and the world as a whole. Accents and traditions and foods… it’s all utterly scrumptious, and it’s my hope that my love for culture shone through enough to inspire others to adore it as well.

Texan author Andrea Renee Cox is a born-again child of God who enjoys writing stories that inspire, copyediting fiction manuscripts, tutoring middle school students, and going on road trips with her family. Whether she’s working on historical, contemporary, women’s fiction, romance, or romantic tragedy, she uses her skills in research and writing techniques—as well as guidance from God—to produce the best story of her ability every time. Her books may be found on her website, and readers are welcome to follow her blog and subscribe to her newsletter for the latest updates in her journey.

Hearts Unknown Author Interview

Hearts Unknown Author Interview

Read an interview with Dienece Darling, author of Hearts Unknown.

About the Book

When the heart longs for what it cannot have, toes aren’t safe in the ballroom.

Edith Howard has long mourned the loss of Clarence. He was more than the boy next door. He was her dearest friend until he left without word or warning. But when Clarence makes a surprise return the London season of 1763, the gentleman standing before her bears little resemblance to the boy she used to know. What happened to Clarence, and why is he back?

A chance encounter might be just the ticket Clarence needs to convince Edith he always has been and always will be hers. If only she wasn’t listening to those dangerous street preachers. Clarence doesn’t know how to save the lady he loves from believing the world will end on February 28th. Or, for that matter, show her all that’s in his heart.

What will it take for Edith to see the man Clarence is today? And dare she let him back into her life when she doesn’t know what drove him away the first time?

Author Interview with Dienece Darling

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

My debut series features events in the early Methodist church, but I’m Baptist. I’ve just long been a fan of the Wesley brothers.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

Edith is a typical lady. She sews, goes shopping, and makes calls. But the bitter winter of 1763 shakes her golden view of life. When a street preacher claims the world will end on February 28th, 1763, Edith wonders what she’s done in life worth presenting to God.

Clarence is a barrister, but the highlight of his day is in the evening when he goes to his club and buries himself in the library with a good book. Although, he always skips over the Bibles on the shelves. Why would anyone put those in there anyway? God is for church not clubs.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

George Bell, a former life-guard turned Methodist street preacher, did predicted the world would end on February 28th, 1763. It caused all sorts of problems for the early Methodist Church (and I do mean a lot!), but I found myself asking, “What if something good could come from this fiasco?” and Hearts Unknown was born.

What did you learn while writing this story?

One of my characters ends up in a tree, and I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal. I could ‘imagine’ what that would be like, right? Well, my dad cuts down trees for a living. So, I thought I’d run it by him. Turns out I was all kinds of wrong!

Apparently, every type of tree is a different climbing experience, so we researched to find a type of tree my dad has climbed that could have possibly been planted behind a London terrace house in the early 1700s. Sounds complicated, but I got to do it over the phone with my dad (he lives in America and I’m in Australia). It was really special for me and a lot of fun.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

Whether God comes today, tomorrow, or in another thousand years He will find us faithful.

Inspirational historical romance author Dienece Darling was born in American but calls Australia home these days. Her stories find love and faith in history. Her first name is a variant spelling of Denise.

Excerpt

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Something few of my readers know is that I truly enjoy DIY projects. In an early season of life, I refinished a different piece of furniture about every month. In the last two years, I sanded, stained, and finished all the new woodwork in our house. Right now, I just settle for making my own laundry soap and dryer sheets, my own vinegar from our apples, my own faux-Thieves cleaner, and try to keep up with canning. I do a LOT of canning (and dehydrating)!

What was the inspiration behind your story?

My brand is “Heart of History” which leads me to places and times in America that are not general knowledge.

I am a former high school history teacher, so, of course, I love history. And I am pretty sure I was born 100 years too late! My favorite Christian Historical novels always seemed to be set during the Civil War. I knew I wanted to write a Civil War story, so months of research took me to the most contested piece of real-estate during that time—western Virginia. Once I found the where, a story line developed from my research.

I have always wondered what it would be like to be a normal farm family caught right smack dab in the middle of that conflict. There were many families who experienced just that, thus When the Mountains Wept became a seedling. The pieces fell quickly into place for the West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm series because history itself wrote much of my story. Actual events inspired practically every chapter, and my mind filled in the rest.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

Each of my books has a definite theme or two. In When the Mountains Wept, I hope readers will discover two things: Without forgiving others, we are bitter, and it is impossible to yield to what God wants for our lives.

Secondly—a lesson I struggle with myself—God has great plans for our lives, but they may not be exactly what we expect. We do not have God figured out, but He has us figured out and knows precisely what is best for us—and He wants the best for us. Always.

Book two, When Heaven Thunders, is about the struggles we face to “fight the good fight” even when there is no right choice available. This book is also about not assuming the worst or giving up on your dreams, regardless of how dark everything appears. I hope readers will relate to the struggles in all my novels on a personal level. And I hope those struggles will lead to meaningful conversations with God among the learning, laughter, and tears throughout the story.

No matter what we face, we can take heart, for Jesus has overcome the world!

Author Interview with Danielle Thorne

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Besides writing, I like to travel and have for many years. One of my favorite places in the world is Yellowstone National Park. I think a lot of people are surprised when I gush about Yellowstone since I’ve lived in the South the majority of my life. It’s a beautiful and spiritual place to me with all kinds of natural wonders and wildlife. It’s one of the few untarnished places left in the country (minus the tourist stops). I went to school a couple hours away from Yellowstone in the late 80s and spent most weekends there, then I returned every few years with my children. Last fall was the first time my husband and I had been back in a while, and we rented a jeep and drove around taking it all in. It was magical, and I already miss it. I would seriously consider a seasonal job there now that I’m an empty nester!

What was the inspiration behind your story?

One thing that fascinates me about life is that it always comes full circle in one way or another. A Guardian Til Christmas is my second book in the fictional small town of Lagrasse, Georgia, and I wanted to bring back someone that once left to chase her dreams. Besides past heartache, I wanted to have some light comedy, too, and the first things I thought of were some of my favorite Sandra Bullock films. Her romcoms inspired the girl boss versus serious hero with a heart of gold in this story, and some of their past struggles were influenced by my own life experiences.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

With every story I write, I try to pass on some kind of message from the things I’ve learned. Our heroine, Kylee, has unresolved feelings about her “perfect” younger sister who tragically passed, and she has to come to terms with them. Sometimes we get so caught up with our dreams trying to prove our worth, we forget that we already have it no matter what we experienced or were taught about ourselves. Healing hurt feelings between our family members and ourselves can be a lifelong journey, but it doesn’t have to be. Moving on is important, but I don’t believe that means we have to move on alone.
