About No Plan at All

Sometimes the best life is the one we never planned.

Sarah Anne Baker never wanted to be anyone’s burden. But hours after losing the Godmother who raised her, she faces an impossible choice: marry her late fiancé’s brother—or flee into the unknown. With fear as her only companion, she places her trust in the one man leaving town that night—the enigmatic traveling peddler known only as Mr. Smith.

Alexander Sinclair walked away from his noble title in Scotland to live a quiet, hidden life. Peddling wares from town to town has given him peace, free from the weight of expectation. Until a desperate young woman crosses his path. He can’t turn her away… no matter the cost.

Together, Sarah and Alex set out on a journey through loss, healing, and a bond neither expected to find. But as secrets surface and choices demand to be made, both must decide: cling to the lives they planned—or risk everything to embrace the future God has written for them.

A tender tale of courage, redemption, and love strong enough to change the course of two hearts forever.

An Interview with Denise M. Colby

This blog unites us over a love of story … What is your current read?

Unexpected by Kimberly Keagan

Turning to your story … What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

In this story, they are basically camping outside with their wagon, so early morning with a campfire, travel to get to the next town to sell wares from the wagon, then set up camp again. A lot of time for talking, reflection, but also hard work in setting up and tearing down camp every day.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

I’m not sure if it’s one scene or an idea that travels throughout. I had a lot of fun writing Alex’s brogue (but it was also challenging) and there’s a time when Sarah finally admits she can’t understand him and I love the banter between them about it. It was also fun to give Sarah wagon motion sickness. That was a real thing during that time-period and I enjoyed weaving that trait throughout the story since they are in a wagon a lot.

What unique research was required to write this story?

Because they were traveling, I studied a lot of maps of the area to understand their route. I learned about early town names and the history behind the people they were named after, and then how they changed names later and why.

What is one bit of research you wish you could have included in the story?

Because I grew up in the area, one of the towns was named different than I knew. Turns out the captain named it after his home town and when they went to put a post office in (a few years after my novel was set), the government told him he had to change the name because there couldn’t be two towns with the same name. So he named the town after his wife.

What was the inspiration behind this story?

When I was writing my first book, When Plans Go Awry, I created a few families who had loved ones pass and become intertwined with one another. But I needed a catalyst for why Luke (the hero in book 1) was sending for a mail order bride that wasn’t about finding a wife to love, etc. I gave him multiple reasons, including Sarah (the heroine in No Plan at All) leaving him right after his ma died to deal with his grief and raising his sisters alone. She’s never on the page, but readers are meant to not like her.

I wrote out that event so I understood the emotions, but I also wrote it from Sarah’s point of view so I could make sure it worked. From there Sarah had her own story to tell. There are always two sides to every situation and Sarah had her own reasons for leaving that night. What were they? Why take the risk? And how could God reach her, teach her, and mold her into who He wanted her to be? What did she need? And who would be the perfect match for her?

I guess I didn’t want readers to ultimately not like her. Sometimes decisions are made that hurt others, but by the power of God we can heal, forgive, and learn from our mistakes. Besides, it’s hard for me to write bad characters—I want to redeem them all.

Then of course, I wanted the chance to write a character from nobility. I was reading a lot of regency but was terrified of writing one because there’s so much to know and I didn’t want to get anything wrong. So during one NanoWrimo year, I wrote the rough draft to No Plan at All and created Alex, who was nobility but was living outside of his world and in the one I had created.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

The main Bible verse theme for this book is PSALM 33:11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations (NIV). We may stray, or make poor choices, but God is always there throughout our lives. We just have to reach out to Him, and allow Him to lead us where he wants us to go.

An Interview With Jerusha Agen

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

Before becoming a professional novelist, I was a filmmaker. I’ve always loved films since I was a child, so I was naturally drawn to the film industry. I specialized in screenwriting, but also did some directing, producing, script supervising, casting, and more.

What makes up your ideal reading environment?

Back when I used to have more time, my favorite setting for reading was stretched out on a sofa with a blanket, hot chocolate, and some of my favorite classical music playing in the background. Now, I’m doing well if I can squeeze in some reading while I’m standing by the sink, brushing my teeth!

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

My favorite scene to write was the epilogue. Why? Because it was the last scene in the book, which meant the book was finished! ?

What unique research was required to write this story?

I had to learn about motorcycles and how to sabotage them! Thankfully, I have an uncle who’s a life-long motorcyclist, and he was able to give me the technical details. He had me hooked when he told me about the “death wobble.” You’ll have to read Wasted to find out what that is (if you don’t know) and how it fits into the story.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

I hope readers will be encouraged to be bold in standing against evil and declaring the truth, even when it’s unpopular or when they might be accused of being unkind. Sharing God’s truth is always the most loving choice and the only way to bring about lasting peace.

Lori’s Christmas novella, Jingle Bell Matchmakers, a part of A Match Made at Christmas novella collection, was named a 2025 ACFW Carol Award finalist.

Author Interview with Lori DeJong

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

Riley’s day starts early, when she spends some time alone with the Lord before getting ready for work, then breakfast. Twice a week, her day begins with some Bible study with her three best friends before a workout. She then heads into the office in downtown Houston, where she runs a practice devoted to championing the wrongfully convicted. Her days might consist of paperwork, court appearances, witness interviews, and so on. I see her usually having lunch at her desk or with her legal team and dinner with her parents at their Houston estate. She spends her evenings doing administrative work or fund-raising for the two charity organization she chairs.

Colton’s day will vary depending on where Riley has to be at any given time. As a protection specialist with a private international security agency, he leads the team of bodyguards assigned to her after an abduction attempt nearly succeeds. As team lead, he’s with her 24/7, staying at her parents’ estate where she’s moved from her home to be more secure. He’s on constant alert whenever she’s out and does reconnaissance work once she’s inside the estate gates to plan for the days ahead, depending on where she needs to be.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

There were a few, which I think is the norm for any author. I enjoyed writing the scene where she meets the security detail her billionaire father insists she have, and she’s not happy about it. There’s also a scene where Riley has an epiphany that literally makes her sick and convinces her she’s in dire need of the protection Colton and his team provides her. It was riveting for me as that scene unfolded in a way I hadn’t expected. (I’m mostly a pantser, so sometimes things happen I didn’t see coming.)

What unique research was required to write this story?

I searched security companies to see what services they provide and found one that had an international presence that inspired Petersen Security International in the book. The real-life company and Petersen both provide protection services, security consulting, installation, and implementation, as well as work alongside law enforcement to provide support in investigation and special operations. I also had to research defense law, especially as it pertains to the appeals process (in Texas), as well as the prison system and how it deals with attorney visits, on-boarding of inmates, and so on.

What did you learn while writing this story?

What I learned about security operatives was interesting, although I couldn’t obtain information about particular policies or tactics due to their classified nature. So, I took a bit of license with some of the protocols used in the book. From a faith standpoint, I always learn more about God as I study the Bible as if I were my character, looking for answers or encouragement pertinent to them. I find it’s usually pertinent to me, too, in some aspect. While my life isn’t at stake due to an unknown threat, I do need protection from an enemy who doesn’t want me to have a strong walk with the Lord or have success in my ministry as an author of Christian fiction.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

I hope, at the very least, they enjoy the story and finish it satisfied their time with Colton and Riley was well-spent. At the other end of the spectrum, I always hope a reader will take away something from any spiritual truths or references to scripture, as well as learn something authentic from the fictional road my characters have to travel to discover how much He loves them and is their ultimate protection. That’s He’s a God who can be trusted with every part of our lives.

Author Interview with Beth K. Vogt

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I’m married to a family physician, Rob Vogt, MD, who is my go-to expert whenever I weave anything medical into one of my novels. Complicated pregnancy? He’s delivered hundreds of babies in his medical career. Broken bones or other injuries? Yep, he can help my fictional characters with those too. Rob also joins me on my Wednesday Instagram reels, where we often talk (laugh?) about how my writing life meshes with our relationship.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

My favorite scene was one I hadn’t plotted. There are two types of writers: plotters and pantsers. Plotters like to plot out their stories, often chapter by chapter and scene by scene. Pantsers give themselves more breathing room and will jump around in their chapters and timeline when they’re writing. No plotting.

While I said there are two types of writers, I admit that I am a plotter who also allows my characters to “breathe.” This means if something unexpected happens while I’m writing – some fun dialogue between my characters or a new idea for a scene – I don’t think, “Nope, that can’t happen because it’s not how I plotted the story.”

Toward the end of Together This Christmas, I realized I’d overlooked a vital scene for Mila, one that would deepen the story in a significant way. And no, I’m not going to be more specific because I want readers to discover that moment as they read the novella.

What unique research was required to write this story?

Timing. Ensuring the timing was correct was especially important in Together This Christmas, and I don’t mean just the months and days of the weeks. Mila and Ben share a special annual holiday tradition, but now that they’re living in different time zones, I had to ensure I understood how that affected the tradition – or if it did. I checked and rechecked this dozens of times – and my agent did too – to get it right.

What was the inspiration behind your story?

Every story starts with a “what if?” For Together This Christmas, my what if was, “What if I wrote a Christmas novella?” Reading other authors’ Christmas novellas each year is one of my favorite holiday traditions. Then I sat down and mulled over what a Beth K. Vogt Christmas novella would be like. I wanted to set a contemporary romance in Colorado, because that’s the setting for all of my novels (with an occasional transition to Florida). I also liked the idea of a small-town romance. The idea of a wedding came to mind, but the twist is it’s not the main characters’ wedding.

What did you learn while writing this story?

The biggest takeaway? Be willing to take feedback and tear your story apart and rewrite it. Here’s a quote I love from writer and editor William Zinsser, “Rewriting is the essence of writing well – where the game is won or lost.” I finished Together This Christmas – it had even gone through the first round of edits – but my agent, who I trust implicitly, gave me needed feedback about the story. And that meant some intensive rewrites. It’s what writers do. We don’t write. We rewrite until we get the story right.

Author Interview

Thank you, Danielle, for letting me tell your readers about me, my writing and, especially, about A Lady Divided.

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I’m brave when writing my stories, but I’m afraid of heights. I remember going to the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago when it was still the tallest building in the city and plastering myself against the wall. When I’m in situations like that, it’s my typical reaction. Then I stretch forward on my tiptoes to see as much as I can—all from a safe distance from the edge.

What makes up your ideal reading environment?

Sheets, pillows, and a bedspread. ?

I love to read in bed at night for about an hour and a half. If it’s an ebook, I turn the room’s light off and use the light from my Kindle. If it’s a print book, I still turn the light off and use a book light. The low light gets me ready for sleeping.

What does a day in the life of your characters look like?

Ooh, great question!

Laurel Tillman owns La Casa del Fuego, her late husband’s sheep ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. She’s the boss lady but works as hard on the ranch as her employee friends—all women. She’s up and going at the crack of dawn, overseeing the chores of others, making decisions about the sheep, treating them when sick or injured, handling business details, and raising a young daughter. Fortunately, cleaning and making meals isn’t on her daily to-do list. Her mother takes care of the house. For supper, all the women take the time to dress like ladies, as opposed to wearing their manly outfits when working.

Quinn Spencer lives in a boarding house in town, so he takes his breakfast and supper there. Having been mentored by an experienced lawyer, he has joined the man’s practice. For the book, Arthur Bruner mainly has him running errands, studying legal cases, and writing letters, clerk-type things that Quinn, a former military major used to giving orders, sometimes bristles against. While he appreciates the experience Arthur has afforded him, he hopes to move into politics in the future.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

This is a hard one, because I have more than a couple. I’ll go with Thanksgiving, which involves four actual scenes. I don’t want to get into it too much, but it’s where Laurel confesses her past to Quinn and he reacts to her story.

What unique research was required to write this story?

I did some research into sheep ranching in the Texas Hill Country. In reading information from a sheep rancher of the period, I thought it was interesting to discover that they would mark the sheep with symbols—triangles, etc.—when it came to the animals’ fates, so they could see that decision just by looking at the individual animal. Nearby, a neighbor raises sheep, and I’ve noticed marks on the members of his flock on occasion.

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

The encouragement is that no matter what we’ve done in life—short of the sin of rejecting Him—God waits to grant His forgiveness when we truly seek Him. In that case, He forgives and forgets, and because He’s willing to do that, we should also be willing to forgive ourselves and others.

Married to her very own knight for thirty plus years, she and her husband have four amazing grown children and two of the handsomest grandsons ever! When she’s not creating trouble for her characters or working at the family business, you can find her cozying up with a steaming cup of tea and a good book. She would love to hear from you at alenaauguste.com.

    Author Interview

What is something interesting readers would enjoy learning about you?

I hail from a large family of four brothers and one little sister. Keeping up with those boys? It toughened me up fast. I could only run to my father for help so many times. Consequently, I’m about as far from a ‘girlie girl” as you can get, which makes it hilariously ironic that I’m writing romance.

What makes up your ideal reading environment?

Easy. A good book and a ginormous cup of tea and I’m one happy gal. Bonus points if I can have a view of water. Noise? Pfft, it’s no match for a good book. Having grown up in a large family and with four kids of my own – I can be surrounded by chaos, and I’d still be lost in the pages. That’s the power of a good story!

What was your favorite scene to write in this story? And why?

Without a doubt, the porch swing scene where Walker and Rebecca share their past in a heart-to-heart conversation under a moonlight sky. So romantic.

Why? I love a hero that can be vulnerable yet strong. Walker in this moment is vulnerable about his past yet a strong shoulder for Rebecca to lean on. Both figuratively and physically.

What unique research was required to write this story?

While I love books, I’m not a librarian so I leaned heavily on a librarian for answers to the duties. Some of the answers were eye opening! Summer reading programs are no joke!

What encouragement do you hope readers will take away from your story?

I want readers to close A Family On His Doorstep with a happy sigh after finishing a good book A takeaway from the story would be that God has a tailor-made plan for each one of us. The mistakes in our past? They’re just a chapter in our story, not the ending.
