Excerpt

Nick kept hold of her hand as he brought Adaleigh’s rocking chair closer and sat. “David was
teasing, but he’s right. I will marry you if that would help you at all.”

“Nick, you wouldn’t be marrying me for the right reasons. Sure, it worked well for Marian and
Gilbert. I won’t do that to you. An imaginary relationship is trouble enough. I shouldn’t have even
suggested it.”

“You did it to protect yourself.” He rested a knuckle under her chin. “I want you to promise me
you’ll do it again. If you ever feel unsafe, use my name. Claim anything you need from me.”

“Nick.” Something in his tone suggested this was more personal than the other times he offered
aid, and her stomach twisted.

“I mean it.” His jaw worked. “I can’t bear to see you hurt like this again.”

Emotion swelled. This was personal to him. Why? Who was she that a man like Dr. Nick
Matrone would sacrifice himself to shelter her? David did, like a brother would. Nick’s reaction
did not make her feel sisterly at all. It made her feel … cherished. Made her want to protect him,
too.
