Dear Lord, this cannot be happening, not after everything.
David Hart slowly opened his eyes, which he’d closed momentarily, not so much for his quick prayer but in the hope that the woman in front of him would be gone when he looked again.
But, no, Jenny Powell still stood in front of him, and even though it had been fifteen years since he’d seen her – since she’d abruptly left town after the cancer she’d fought had gone into remission – he would have known her anywhere.
But what was she doing here – now – at her grandmother, Estelle Winter’s house in Living Skies, Saskatchewan? The house known as Christmas House, because of its decorations and warm, welcoming atmosphere during the Christmas season, had always held a place of honor.
At five foot eleven, she could almost meet him eye to eye, which she was doing now, in fact, with an expression that was as chagrined and befuddled as his must be. She was still slim but muscular, her face still long, narrow and firm-jawed, lit by eyes as blue as a Saskatchewan-summer sky. She still smelled like she was perpetually baking doughnuts, a sweet comforting scent that had always made him want to reach out to her.
An odd thing to remember when faced with someone he had never wanted to see again.
“Awkward,” Rowena, one of his eight-year-old twins stage-whispered. Beside her, Reba giggled, a sound that lifted his heart with gratitude. Eighteen months ago, he hadn’t known if he would ever hear that sound again.
