Welcome to First Line Friday!
Today I’m featuring

Her Darling Mr. Day by Grace Hitchcock.

Jilted in front of all New York, Theodore Day decides to lose himself in his family’s luxury riverboat business in New Orleans and compete against his brother to become the next company head. The brother with the most sales by summer’s end will win the position. Thanks to Theodore’s fame as a suitor in Willow Dupré’s outlandish competition to find a husband, he has become very desirable royalty in southern society and thus has an advantage.

It took Flora Wingfield’s best work to convince her family to summer in New Orleans, but with Teddy Day a bachelor once again, she’s leaving nothing to chance. Desperate to stand out from all the clamoring belles, Flora attempts a bold move that goes completely awry, only to find it’s her interior design skills that finally catch his notice.

But when Flora learns her father has matchmaking schemes of his own, Teddy will have to decide where his happiness truly lies and what he is willing to sacrifice for it.

First Line

[Graphic Text]: Port of New Orleans, Louisiana – June 1883 — It had taken some of her best work to convince her parents and four sisters to summer in New Orleans instead of in their mansion in Newport, but with Teddy Day finally a bachelor once more, Flora Wingfield wasn’t leaving anything to chance.

My Review

Her Darling Mr. Day is the second book in Grace Hitchcock’s American Royalty series. I’ve been looking forward to this book after reading My Dear Miss Dupre. In fact, I highly recommend reading My Dear Miss Dupre before reading Her Darling Mr. Day so you don’t risk any spoilers.

Going into this story, I was already feeling that Flora and Teddy both deserve a happily ever after after all that happened in the previous book, but whether they will finally find one … well, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome, even though Flora has her heart set on Teddy.

Admittedly, I found the girls in Flora’s way were highly annoying, but that’s probably because I wanted Flora and Teddy to end up together so much. And the men who wanted to take Flora away from Teddy … I wanted to tell them to go find another girl! Most of all, I wished Teddy and Flora could finally land on the same page at the same time and realize they were would happiest together.

Likely due to all my hoping, I did find story a bit exhausting to read because of all the drama. There’s a bit of suspense, especially toward the end. And I love the pirate theme threaded throughout. For fans of My Dear Miss Dupre, which was a twist off the Bachelorette, then My Darling Mr. Day is definitely for you!
