Brielle Durand is a key defender and hunter for her people’s peace-loving French settlement in the Canadian mountains. When a foreigner wanders too near to their secret homes, she has no choice but to disarm and capture him. She won’t allow another massacre like the one that killed her mother a dozen years before. But now, what to do with this man who looks at her in a strange way?
Evan MacManus was on assignment to find among the caves the mineral pitchblende that might help America win the War of 1812. Despite being taken prisoner, Evan is determined to complete his mission. But when that assignment becomes at odds with his growing appreciation of the villagers and Brielle, does he follow through on the promise he’s made to his government or take a risk on the path his heart tells him is right? Either choice will spell death for someone.

Danielle’s Review
A Warrior’s Heart is the first book in a new historical romance series called Brides of Laurent by Misty M. Beller. Evan MacManus is a spy looking for a mineable material that could help end America’s war with England. However, when he gets too close to a hidden community, their head of security takes him prisoner. Brielle Durand only wants to protect her home. If that means this handsome stranger must stay locked away in a cave, then so be it.
It is fun to read about lady warriors. Brielle is obviously skilled and deserving of her position and it takes a while for her to open up to Evan. It was interesting to read how Evan handled his captivity. They treated him well as they came to understand him, though they still held him under guard. The relationship between Brielle and Evan unfolded slowly, moved forward by several challenging circumstances.
This was an enjoyable read, albeit not my favorite by this author. I’m looking forward to the second book in this series and hoping it’s about Brielle’s friend, who makes a significant appearance in this book. If you like historical romance, give A Warrior’s Heart a try
