The Heart’s Charge by Karen Witemeyer.

Book Blurb

Members of Hanger’s Horsemen, Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks arrive in Llano County, Texas, to deliver a steed, never expecting they’d deliver a baby as well. Left with an infant to care for, they head to a nearby foundling home, where Mark encounters the woman he’d nearly married a decade ago.

After failing at love, Katherine Palmer dedicated her life to caring for children, teaming up with Eliza Southerland to start Harmony House. From mixed ancestry, illegitimate, and female, Eliza understands the pain of not fitting society’s mold. Yet those are the very attributes that lead her to minister to outcast children. The taciturn Jonah intrigues her with his courage and kindness, but there are secrets behind his eyes–ghosts from wars past and others still being waged.

However, when a handful of urchin children from the area go missing, a pair of Horsemen are exactly what the women need. Working together to find the children, will these two couples find love as well?

Danielle’s Review

The Heart’s Charge by Karen Witemeyer is the second book in her Hanger’s Horseman series. Instead of focusing on one romance, this story has two!

Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks are two of Matt Hanger’s famed Horseman, but their plans get derailed when they have to help a woman deliver a baby. Not their usual rescue mission. (So these two ex-cavalry officers can be forgiven for not being as understanding as the doctor they fetch when the mother exhibits what is now known as PPD symptoms). The baby brings them in contact with two women who threaten to capture their hearts faster then they can catch the bad guy.

I love Karen Witemeyer’s stories. They have the perfect blend of history, adventure, romance, and humor. The Heart’s Charge is no different, even as it delves into how a black man (Jonah) and a mixed race woman (Eliza) navigate their situations. I absolutely loved Eliza. She is so three-dimensional with her bold, no-nonsense personality mixed with her fear of horses, especially Jonah’s particularly large cavalry horse. It made the ending scenes some of my favorites.

I won’t comment too much more on the plot or other characters because I don’t want to give anything away. The reading of this book is so enjoyable I wouldn’t want you to miss out on the discoveries. And I do hope you will take a chance to read The Heart’s Charge. It was a delightful story!
