Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.“
Dr. Seuss said that in I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!, the prefect quote to celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday and Read Across America Day while exploring this week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic: Characters Whose Jobs I Wish I Had. I love reading about characters with unique jobs because it gives a sneak peek into those careers. Who knows, perhaps that’s all the impetus someone needs to go someplace new.
One job I think would be awesome to have is in photography. It also means characters like Meg, Lily, and Harper are some of my favorites to read about. Even more fun, these three experience quite the adventures surrounding their jobs as a landscape photographer, a spy/Room 40 photo expert, and a crime scene photographer turned nature photographer.
I’ve always loved STEM topics – well, the non-squeamish ones like Math, (Marine) Archaeology, Astronomy, and Plants (like spices!). Not entomology. Though if that’s your thing, definitely read Nora and Owen’s story in A Mosaic of Wings because it makes even someone who dislikes bugs as much as me want to like them! Margot, Lucy &Dash, and Annabelle & Gray epitomize what I love about STEM studies, which makes these some of my favorite books.
Lastly is what I think to be one of the coolest jobs in the world: telegraph operator. I’ve always thought it would be awesome to know Morse Code. Grace and Amos, Alice and Douglas, and Emma are all employed as operators. In fact, Line by Line and Crossed Lines are both part of a whole series about telegraph operators: Love Along the Wires.
What character has a job you wish you had?
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
Actually, I’ll leave the professional part off the job of ‘Professional Photography’ and just enjoy passionate photography as a fulfilling hobby 🙂
That way there are no deadlines, events, and taxes to worry about, lol. Just birds, flowers, and landscapes to capture and enjoy!
Keep up the good work on the blog, Danielle. So many good books to read these days…

Thank you! Yes, so many good books. And I like that – leaving the “job” part out of photography so you can just enjoy it! 🙂
I love your picks. Photographer would be my pick.

Thank you!
Oh, being a photographer sounds like such a wonderful job! I follow a lot of National Geographic photographers on Instagram and I always think about how amazing it would be to do what they do for a living.
Me too! 😀
I love that you chose telegraph operator! What a brilliant answer to the prompt. Definitely checking into those three books.
Thank you!
ooo i love this! And who knew there were so many books about telegraph operators?!? lol
Right?! They’re so fun, too!
Professional Photographer is such a great job, too bad I take terrible pictures. Back when the telegraph was the main way to communicate, that would have been such an important job. Great choices, Danielle.
Thank you Carla!
Professional photographer does sound like a fun job, although in fact, I’m a terrible photographer! LOL. A DISTANCE TOO GRAND sounds like a great book. I really want to read it and a bunch of the others you mention. Thanks for some great-sounding recs!
Happy TTT!

I highly recommend A Distance Too Grand, especially if you think photography sounds like a fun job 🙂 it showcases the Grand Canyon beautifully. I hope you’ll be able to enjoy some of these titles!
I love Astronomy and Archeology, too! Such great topics.
