Castaway with the Cowboy is a Calico Trails reprinted novella by Pam Hillman. When their steamship sinks, Zach Holifield, Abby Lindstrom, and a small ragtag crew land on a small island in the Caribbean. Will they survive long enough to be rescued or will they need to make this place their new home?

Even though Castaway with the Cowboy is a reprint, it was my first reading of it. That meant I got to enjoy all the twists and turns with fresh eyes and I enjoyed every one of them! From the way Zach, a cowboy, escapes the sinking steamship. To Abby’s determination to protect the two children in her charge. To the dangers upon dangers they face on the island.

Mixing cowboys and deserted islands creates a unique tone that permeates the story. Add in a fun secondary cast and the cool ending twist, which I am definitely not going to spoil (I also suggest waiting to read the historical note until the end, too), and it was an all around delightful story.

This January, if you’re looking for a fun-in-the-sun escape, grab a copy of Castaway with a Cowboy and enjoy the Caribbean from a different point of view.
