The Price of Valor is the third and final book in Susan May Warren‘s Global Search and Rescue series. In The Price of Valor we get to see whether Ham gets his happily ever after.
One thing I love about Susan May Warren’s books is there is often a natural disaster to go along with the danger. In fact, of the Susan May Warren books I’ve read so far, my favorites have been the ones that included a tornado and a hurricane (the last was Jake and Aria’s Global SAR story in The Heart of a Hero). I love natural disaster suspense and I didn’t see the natural disaster that occurs in The Price of Valor coming.
Ham and Signe finally have their first chance to speak to one another after ten years and Ham’s belief that his wife had died. Not only was Signe still alive, she kept his daughter a secret from him for those ten years. Until she needed him to protect their little girl in case Signe ended up dead – for real this time. Ham and Signe’s reunion is cut short when disaster hits.
To fully appreciate Ham’s story, it’s helpful to have read the first two books in the series. Much of his backstory is revealed in The Heart of a Hero. The side story in The Price of Valor revisits Jenny and Orion’s story from book one: The Way of the Brave. So all three books are very entwined, making the series wrap up in this book. However, if you haven’t read any books in Susan May Warren’s other series, you may feel like you’re missing something when side characters are referred to and that’s because you are. I have only read a handful of her books and have another handful waiting in my TBR pile, so I’m familiar enough to feel like I have a lot of catching up to do. It doesn’t take away from Ham’s story, but having read those books before The Price of Valor would have added depth, I think.
I marvel at Susan May Warren’s ability to paint a picture with words. I could truly see Ham and Signe as they escaped disaster or fought off people trying to kill them. And, without giving anything away, I feel like the ending of The Price of Valor is rather satisfying. You’ll have to give the series a read and let me know if you feel the same way.
