Do you like to read new-to-you authors? I’m always a little nervous even though I love to find a new author whose books I can start collecting. Rachel Scott McDaniel is now officially one of those authors for me. Her latest book The Red Canary is simply fantastic.
Vera Pembroke is a singer at a speakeasy in Pittsburgh. Not her favorite job in the world, but it provides her food and a place to live. When she becomes a witness to murder, her whole world turns upside down. Sergeant Mick Dinelo is tasked with Vera’s protection. Not a job he relishes considering he’s supposed to be on vacation. Especially since she makes it difficult.
1920s and 30s is one of my favorite eras in U.S. history and Rachel Scott McDaniel expertly brings it to life in The Red Canary. Vera is marvelous. Absolutely marvelous. The perfect personality. A blend of sarcastic and real. Mick is hilarious. Not because he has a sense of humor, because he doesn’t. And because of that, he’s perfectly cast, too.
If prohibition and the Roaring 20s is your type of history, then you must read The Red Canary. The caveat I would add is there is a strong Christian message. If that is exactly the type of book you like, then definitely pick up a copy. It’s a fabulous book with a sweet, fun romance and good deal of suspense set during a colorful time in history.
