Daughters of Northern Shores is Joanne Bischof‘s sequel to Sons of Blackbird Mountain. It occurs a couple years later and follows the aftermath of the characters’ decisions in the final pages of Sons of Blackbird Mountain.

Aven Norgaard is now married to Thor and they are expecting their first baby. However, when Thor’s liver begins to fail, their hopes and dreams for the future may die with him.

Haakon Norgaard has lived aboard an ice harvesting vessel for the past few years while wrestling with his deplorable actions that prompted his flight. When he finally decides to return home to seek forgiveness, he discovers his family under attack.

Daughters of Northern Shores was a challenging book to read. Especially in light of the recent Me Too movement. To read about a character who longs to made amends for his actions and the woman who must overcome the harm he caused her. I thought the author especially handled Aven’s character beautifully. She was fully supported by her family and forgiveness, trust, and healing were not demanded of her or too readily given.

Trigger warning aside, Daughters of Northern Shores dove into real life messes without offering Christian platitudes. The characters wrestled with their decisions, their choices, and their responses. How and if redemption plays out in the end is something you’ll have to find out by reading it yourself. I highly recommend doing so.
