Book Review | Whispers from the Shadows

History plus spies usually equals a book I love. Whispers from the Shadows, the second book in the Culper Ring series by Roseanna M. White exceeded all my expectations! Emotional, touching, intriguing, page-turning, this book has it all.

When Gweneth Fairchild, daughter of the Fairchild we met in Ring of Secrets, witnesses life-altering treachery, she escapes to America to seek refuge from the Lane family. However, it may not be the safest place for the daughter of an English General since the Lanes have resurrected the Culper Ring to aid their young country during the War of 1812.

Thaddeus Lane knows everyone in Baltimore. At least it seems that way considering how friendly he is with every person he meets. But friendship isn’t what he feels when he meets Gwyn. Will he let love blind him to potential trouble or will it give hope during the dark days of war and treachery?

It is rare for a book to reach such a deep emotional level for me, but Whispers from the Shadows caught my heart. Thad has an intuition born of his relationship with God. Gwen wrestles with the demons left from the loss she witnessed. Together they have a chance to change the tide of an entire nation.

These characters were among the most real I’ve read and I was rooting for them from the start. I especially loved that they were the children of three of the characters from the first Culper book.

I highly recommend Whispers from the Shadows, though I do suggest checking out Ring of Secrets and the free novella Fairchild’s Lady first. Hopefully Whispers from the Shadows touches your heart like it did mine.
