You need to read A Mosaic of Wings by Kimberly Duffy. Yes, it’s fiction. Yes, it’s historical. Yes, it’s Christian. You should still read it. And here’s why….
First, it’s one of the few books I’ve read that doesn’t take place in common countries like the U.S., England, or France. The story begins with Nora Shipley torn between continuing her education, caring for her family’s needs, and honoring her father’s legacy. Her stepfather is making her choice even more difficult, forcing her to prioritize, even if that means giving up her dreams.

Second, the historical time period of early 1900s adds a complicated dynamic for Nora. Women meant little, to the educated, to the men, whether American, British, or Indian, and even to the white missionaries in India. Nora, however, was determined to overcome all of those hurdles to make her place in the scientific world. Just like her father.
Lastly, the author’s ability to pull emotions from the reader is worth the read regardless of any other aspects of the story. The heartbreak for Nora having to chose between her education and her family. The anger at Nora being dismissed by the men in both the U.S. and India. The determination when she decides to save a young girl who is being forced to do something horrible against her will.
While the focus is on Nora and her struggles in a male world, there is one man who surprises her. At first she considered Owen Epps to be just like all the others. Until they arrive in India and Nora finds her eyes opened to wonders, colors, and love by a country – and a man – that fully captures her heart.
Honestly, these are just some of the reasons you should read A Mosaic of Wings. It’s also full of fascinating science, butterflies, and romance. It’s not a typical novel under the genre of Christian Historical Fiction, which is exactly why you should definitely give it a read.
