Standoff by Patricia Bradley is the first book in the Natchez Trace Park Rangers series. Luke Fereday is undercover, trying to take down a drug pipeline along the Natchez Trace National Parkway. Brooke Danvers is grieving the loss of her father on the eve of her swearing in as a Law Enforcement Park Ranger. She doesn’t know Luke’s real job, only that it’s nice to have her old friend back in town.

Brooke – and readers – are in for a wild ride in Standoff. Most of the twists, turns, and discoveries either directly affect or are ones she discovers. She’s a strong woman who gets a lot thrown at her in a short period of time.

Luke wants to tell Brooke why he’s really back in town, but can’t. That doesn’t mean he won’t keep an eye on her. He cared about her once and still does, even if he’s not the right guy for her.

Patricia Bradley is a new-to-me author. When I saw this series was about Park Rangers, I was intrigued. And the intrigue paid off. The unique setting added to the twists and turns. I knew nothing about the Natchez Trace Park Rangers, so it was a bit of a struggle to keep up with the terminology. That’s okay, it just means I want to read the next book in the series to learn more.

Overall, this was a fun, romantic suspense story that kept me guessing. The list of suspects were clear, though not explicit, which I really liked. I also liked how you couldn’t tell which was really the bad guy until the very, very end. If you’re looking for an entertaining read that will suck you into the story, Standoff is definitely one to check out.
