How often can you say you’ve been to the setting of a novel? I’ve visited Corpus Christi, Texas, so it was fun to have that image in my mind’s eye while reading Lisa Harris’ latest novel The Traitor’s Pawn.

When a former senator is shot and a detective is kidnapped, FBI agent Jack Shannon isn’t expecting the crimes to dovetail with the investigation that has brought him to Texas. But when he discovers the identity of the woman who was kidnapped, the case becomes incredibly personal.

Aubrey Grayson needed a vacation, which is why she is visiting the former senator, a man who was like a father to her. When he is shot right in front of her, she goes after the shooter only to be abducted at gunpoint. Doubtful help was coming, she uses every skill in her arsenal to make sure she makes it out alive.

Jack is determined to find Aubrey. He left Corpus Christi long ago because Aubrey was dating his brother when Jack realized he loved her. Unwilling to hurt either of them, he just faded away, gradually losing touch with both. Will he reach Aubrey before it’s too late? Or will leaving all those years ago be the last time he will ever see her?

The Traitor’s Pawn was an enjoyable story. I really liked Jack’s character. It was easy to be sympathetic toward him, to feel his dilemmas. And the plot kept me guessing. As much as I suspected what might happen next, I would discover I really had no idea which direction the story would turn. Those are the best types of plots.

If you’re looking for a romance with the twists and turns of suspense, then pick up a copy of The Traitor’s Pawn. It will take take you on a journey where the ending will remain as elusive as the bad guy.
