Dead Heat, the fourth book in Susan Sleeman‘s Truth Seekers series highlights Nick Thorn, Director of Cyber Crimes at the Veritas Center. He might be my favorite of the Veritas partners, so I’ve been looking forward to hearing his story.
One reason I like Nick’s character is because he embodies opposites so well. He is a geek who is never without a gun, as arrogant as he is fun-loving, loyal, protective, and yet with a past we finally get to hear. He’s on a mission to track down a hacker targeting hospital records when he becomes part of a larger investigation.

We also get to know FBI agent Piper Nash as she hunts a hacker who has destroyed her sister’s life. We’ve seen Piper in at least one other story as she is friends with Blackwell Tactical’s Eryn Calloway, a name you will recognize from Susan’s Cold Harbor series. She’s one focused woman who doesn’t let the fact that she’s a female get in the way of doing her job. After all, she is an FBI agent perfectly capable of handling herself in dangerous situations.
Dead Heat has one of my favorite opening chapters. With Piper on a stakeout, she resorts to a kiss in order to prevent a man from ruining her op. Meanwhile, Nick is after the same hacker. When a gunman opens fire, Nick and Piper realize they need to work together if they’re going to find the bad guys. And the sparks fly from those opening pages all the way to the end.
I am greatly enjoying the Truth Seekers series and Dead Heat was an excellent addition. Nick’s cockiness and Piper’s spunk make for an entertaining read and the danger won’t let you put the book down.
