Reading Wednesday | Hummus and Homicide

Hummus and Homicide, by Tina Kashian, is the first book in the Kebab Kitchen Mystery series. Lucy Berberian is a lawyer who returns to her home town after quitting her big city job. Her family owns a Mediterranean restaurant, where she reluctantly agrees to work. But when the health inspector dies after Lucy served her, all Lucy’s plans go awry.

Not only is the health inspector dead after eating at Kebab Kitchen, she and Lucy are high school enemies who had a dust-up the day before. The health inspector also cited Kebab Kitchen, potentially tanking the possibility of selling the restaurant. 20181001_110942

When Lucy discovers the investigating detective is her sister’s spurned ex-boyfriend, she realizes she’s likely to go down for this murder unless she finds out who really killed Heather Banks.

Speaking of ex-boyfriends, Lucy has a run-in with her own ex, whom she suspects of the murder. But he is relentless in wanting to pick up where they left off. Lucy isn’t so sure, especially when she goes from no love life to having two handsome men ask her out.

I really liked the ethnic angle of Hummus and Homicide. Lucy is a mix of several Mediterranean nationalities, with unruly curly hair and a family to match. But will she lose her family’s restaurant and her freedom or will she track down the murderer?
