Do you have a good night ritual with your children? In How do you say Good Night, illustrated by Catalina Echeverri, Zoey the Zebra wonders how the animals around her say good night. The story is her search for the answer to her question.

Zoey lives in a grassy area on the continent of Africa. On her quest to discover how other animals say good night, she treks across flatlands, through mud holes, and by rivers. She meets a variety of different animals that all live somewhere on the continent.

One of the aspects that I enjoyed about How do you say Good Night was how the author gave the unique names of each group of animals. For example, a pride of lions or sounder of warthogs. I also liked the opportunity to introduce young readers to animals they may not read about much, such as the ostrich.

The beginning wasn’t as smooth as I would like to see in a children’s book, but the rythmic poetry that appeared on each page was catchy. Each of the animal families has a different good night routine, yet each one ends with a version of a prayer good night. I would have liked to see stronger differences between each animal group, but I love how differences are praised.

How do you say Good Night is a great concept. The illustrations are whimsical, too. It’s a good way to introduce young readers to how others say good night.
