Mind Games, by Nancy Mehl, is the first book in the new Kaely Quinn Profiler series. A romantic suspense that borders more on psychological thriller, it follows FBI Behavioral Analyst Kaely Quinn on her quest to catch a killer before he catches her.

Special Agent Noah Hunter is paired with Kaely when a poem arrives, threatening a series of murders ending with Kaely’s apparent suicide. As one of the best behavioral analysts, Kaely must profile this serial killer, but she and Noah barely begin their investigation before the first murder victim is discovered. 20181212_094420

In a tale full of twists and turns, Kaely has to confront her past as well as co-workers who see her as such a strange woman they don’t believe she should still be with the FBI, let alone working on this case. Noah, however, has seen how Kaely works and has confidence in her abilities and in the profile she has created. Will it be enough to prevent the serial killer from completing the actions laid out in the poem?

I would recommend reading Mind Games during daylight hours. As a behavioral analyst, Kaely – and thus the reader – gets into the mind of the serial killer. Fans of shows like Criminal Minds will likely enjoy that aspect of the book. Kaely also has internal struggles relating to her past that lends to the thriller tone of the story.  Nancy Mehl is a masterful writer and Mind Games unfolds its suspense all the way to the end.
