Bridgewater Holidays, by Marion Marchetto, is a heartwarming collection of short stories revolving around the various national holidays in the United States. With a dash of historical narrative, the stories bring to life characters living in and working for the Bridgewater mansion.
I love short stories. I enjoy writing them and reading them. Bridgewater Holidays was no exception. As a busy, work-from-home mom, I would leave the book open on my coffee table so that when I had a chance to sneak in a break, I could read a whole story. A handful of pages, a few minutes of rest, and off I went, taking with me the characters and their individual stories.
Short stories can be a challenge to get just right. Marion Marchetto did an excellent job of adding depth to the characters in each of the short stories while not providing so much detail the story was bogged down by them. Instead, it made me care about of the characters for the brief interaction we had.
I also enjoyed how each story revolved around a holiday, kind of like the moving Holiday Inn. Not only did the event take place on the holiday, but the characters themselves interacted with the meaning of the holiday. For example, the Valentine’s Day story was a love story and the Mother’s Day story was all about moms.
Bridgewater Holidays is a book I would recommend if you would like a collection of heartwarming stories to enjoy. I sure did.
