The Legacy by Michael Phillips: a book review

Bethany House, Books Review, Literary Fiction, Novels, Writing Spot

My latest read was out of my usual genre. The Legacy, by Michael Phillips, is the third book in the Secrets of the Shetlands trilogy. I chose this book to review because I had already read the first book and reviewed the secondThe Legacy finished the story.

Set primarily in the beauty of the Shetlands, The Legacy continues to follow Loni Ford’s experiences after she receives an unlooked-for inheritance. Now she must decide whether to stay in the Shetlands or return to her life in the States. On top of that, the decision may affect her deepening relationship with David Tulloch. Can a relationship continue if she leaves Whales Reef?9780764217500

The Legacy also tells the story of Loni’s ancestor, Emily. Emily first visits Whales Reef as a companion to an elderly lady. She takes advantage of the opportunity to continue her research into the birds of the region. While Emily is exploring, she meets Brogan, the chief’s son.

The middle of the book tells of Emily’s time in the Shetlands and the budding friendship she has with Brogan. This is the best part of the the book. The beginning is, unfortunately, quite slow and thus a challenge to wade through. The ending drags and is more of a wrap up or epilogue of the trilogy than the book.

All in all, I enjoyed the story of the Shetlands. The middle book of the trilogy was my favorite of the three, though I did enjoy getting to know Emily in this last book. To get the full picture of the complex inheritance and legacy of the Secrets of the Shetlands trilogy, I recommend reading all three books close together. Perhaps in that way the literary nature of the story can whisk you away to an island that seems another world away.
